I thought I should read it and let my students know if it was any good. I have only read one chapter so far but it describes a dystopian alternate reality in which Islamophobes have just come into power in the United States and are enacting all sorts of anti-Muslim laws. The main character is a Muslim-American teenager who is very frightened by the changes she sees happening in her small town. I picked this book because I’m still trying to complete my goal of reading the entire series. What I like most about this book or series is the fact that it always manages to remain interesting to keep readers engaged, even during the more “duller” parts of the book. We advanced so much that we are at war with are self's and in order to combat the enemies the navy approved a program to create genetically modified solders call the spartan program. To properly make these enhanced solders they have to start them off when they are kids so kidnapping them is the best and only option. They also have to find the right kid for the program we learn this when we are introduced to the director of the program Dr. Halsey where she is on her way to meet the protagonist John. Halsey notes that there is a reason hes special besides being the perfect candidate for the spartan program its because hes lucky. Cutting forward a bit we are introduced the an AI(artificial intelligence) program called Déjà who will be the kids teacher and Chief Mendez who will train the kids to be solders. Halsey announces why the kids have been picked and taken from their homes and then sends them to bed where they will be given a number and will start their training first thing tomorrow. After a few months of training Chief Mendez has the trainees run an obstacle cores where we are introduced to Sam-034 and Kelly-087. A few months later Johns leader ship starts to show on a training mission and hes promoted to squad leader after he managed to get all 75 trainees back to base. 2 years later the trainees are undergoing a procedure that will make them stronger, faster and more durable. only 30 of the trainees come out unscathed and will be continuing their training after 2 days of bed rest and getting used to their new strength. ]]> 2021-09-29 19:06:12 UTC https://padlet.com/tgarland4/vpprv8l0af1e2lgb/wish/1779123610 Independent Reading Log #1 https://padlet.com/tgarland4/vpprv8l0af1e2lgb/wish/1779879639 The book that I read (and finished!) today was a realistic fiction book surrounding a year long passage in the main characters life. She is a recent college graduate that decides to take a gap year of doing nothing to prepare herself for whatever is next in life. She has decided the best way to go about this is to sleep as much as possible so she goes on a bender to be able to sleep for 16 hours a day.

I picked this book because it was recommended to me and because it has very mixed reviews.

I like how realistic and frank the narration is. Every character is extremely unlikeable which makes the dialogue quite funny. It is fiction, and I chose it because I like fantasy-especially ones that break archetypes. Unfortunately this book didn’t do as good of a job at that as I had hoped. I’m near the end of the book, so I’m not gonna do an in depth summary. The main plot of the book it takes place in early England and is supposed to be a sort of retelling of the Arthur story. The main character is a fey. The fey are being persecuted by a Christian militia force, who burn down her village. Her mother gives her a sword that grants her strength but also makes her blood thirsty. And the rest of the book is her deliberating whether she should use this clearly cursed sword to save her people or if she should bring the sword to Merlin who wants to destroy it. Jackson. I think she's a brilliant writer. I can feel the emotion in her writing through the characters. So far in the book the main character Enchanted wants to become a singer. She tries out for a singing contest and the made-up celebrity in the book is Korey Fields. I think he's based on R.Kelley. But he likes Enchanted.. more than her voice. The problem is he's 28 and she's 17. She starts talking to him more and even going to his studio and signing with him. He gets touchy. It's not right because he's an adult. This book is about a disease of some sort that kills you from the inside and messes you up. A group of dudes at a gas station sees a truck run into a pump filled with a dying family that we met in the prologue, and their eyes were bugged out of their heads, their necks swelled up and their skin turned purple. I'm not quite sure what's happening yet, or if I've met all of the characters yet, but it's a very intriguing read. The story was about a girl named Tsugu coming back to the town she grew up in, after moving away for a few years, to find that all her friends from elementary school have changed in soem way. In the end, she ends up ditching the “friends” that became bullies and runs away to Tokyo with one more friend, who was being bullied.

I don’t have a favourite “part” of the book, but instead the cliche/aspect of two innocent, loving and kind characters running away or becoming independent

Baby Teeth is a fiction book that I chose because I wanted to read a horror book. So far, the main character, Hanna, is a seven year old girl who has never spoken a word, she's been taken to multiple tests and doctors' offices for this, and has a shaky relationship with her mother. I picked this book because I've enjoyed other books of the twilight series. So far in the book I've been introduced to the Cullen family, the Swan family, and a few side characters. The Cullens are a family of vampire who live in the town of Forks, where Bella Swan just moved to. Edward Cullen is very intrigued by Bella. His powers of mind reading don't work on her, and her blood is the best thing he's ever smelled. My favorite part about this book is that normally the twilight books are from the perspective of Bella Swan, but this one is from Edwards perspective. I picked this book because I have finished the show and wanted to see how the books compare. The book is about animals that walk and talk like humans, they’re in high school. The animals feel a societal difference between herbivores and carnivores. Herbivores and much smaller and get scared of carnivores often. At the beginning of the book, one of the herbivores gets attack or “devoured” by a student at the school. Now everyone is scared and keeps suspecting the main character, Legoshi, because he is a wolf who was friends with the dead student. So far I really enjoy the difference in art style compared to the show. So far, we're starting to get to know the characters a little bit more and how they live. However, a handful of characters start sneezing a lot and getting headaches, and one of the characters, Vic, has already put two and two together that they might all have the disease that the guy who crashed the truck had. I enjoy a lot of Kurt Vonnegut's short stories. His stories are typically allegory- or at least commenting on society. The theme that I took from this story was about people putting themselves and others into archetypes. Given the title of the book, I was not super surprised that in Chapter Three, officials show up at the main character's home and say that it is time for the family to be "relocated". I like the concept for this book - the author is imagining what it would look like now if America treated Muslim the way they treated the Japanese after Pearl Harbor. The author is imagining the Internment process with some modern updates such as TSA-like scanning wands and permanent tattoo that are applied instantaneously with invisible ultraviolet ink. However, I am a little disappointed with some of the similarities that just seem a bit too overdone. They are on a train headed to Manzanar, for example. Legoshi is a part of the drama club which has had some issues since Tem, a herbivore, was devoured by a carnivore. There is drama happening in the drama cub over the understudy for Tem's part. Because the play is very soon the understudy, the lead, and Legoshi sneak into school to practice. Legoshi is doing lookout for them and a bunny appears out of the shadows. He suddenly feels the urge to attack her and almost takes a bite into her. Luckily he didn't and she ran away. After that incident though he has to go get flowers for the play. And guess who runs the gardening club? The bunny, Haru. Jackson often has crazy twists at the end of her books and i think it shows her writing style. Turns out Korey is murdered and there's more than a dozen girls coming forward with their stories. In the authors note Jackson tells her story about dating an adult as a teenager. She also makes clear that the book was not based on R. Kelly but about grown men abusing their power. So when it came to made up Korey Fields he definitely abused his power. His fame, money and age. This happens to many young people around the world. These two separate views of the story make for an interesting read. The mother, Suzette, has suffered for a long time from Crohn's disease. Her trips to the doctor's for this during her whole life has given her a trauma response to being in hospital-esque spaces, this causes her to have a hard time comforting her daughter in her frequent visits for Hanna's behavioral issues and lack of speech. Their relationship pushes further apart as well because of Suzette's relationship with her own mother. Her mother was neglectful and apathetic, so Suzette struggles to have an emotional connection with her daughter. In the movie of this book they actually skipped over a really cool part I read through. They had to move the Spartans into a secret facility so they could train them more and during their training they have a capture the flag match. Its Spartans hand to hand combat vs the security armed with prototype exo suite armor. The fight is really cool not because it like a war zone kinda fight but because its a stealthy fight that is over super fast but the book slows it down for the reader which was nice. It's a non-fiction book that tells the history of Bunker Hill. I selected this book during our Advisory visit to the nearby Barnes and Nobel due to recommendations from Trish to read the work of this author.

After an hour of reading it seems to be a very well-written novel, going into detail on many events and small actions and how they caused larger impacts and changes in the way the revolution would develop.

His name was Vic Hammer. There were people looking at security cameras in some sort of science facility, I wasn't sure what was happening, but there were dead bodies on the cameras. The next chapter was setting up a new character, Larry Underwood who is a musician and had a hit song, "Baby Do You Dig Your Man?" Something about the characters is a lot of them are extremely racist and use the n word. They are also either from California or Texas. Though I only read the first story, it was interesting nonetheless. The first story in the book is called "Where I Live" and tells of a small cape village called Barnstable Village, which is described as if they are living hundred(s) of years in the past. For example, the people of village only found out that tuna were edible in the past handful of decades. This short story was very interesting to me. It posed a setting where overpopulation is a massive issue. The government combated this problem through a combination of science and Christian-like morality around sex. The government mandated a form of birth control that prevented people from experiencing pleasure during sex, rather than something that prevents an egg from implanting. Ignoring all the authoritarian elements of this text I think the commentary was intriguing. Each chapter shifts between 7 year old Hanna and her mother Suzette. Both are shown to be creative and artistic people, in different ways. Hanna describes things she doesn't understand with a childlike imagination not shown in her mother's chapters. She describes what her mother would call a Volkswagen Beetle as a "bubble car" and trucks as "tanks". While Hanna has a colorful and imaginative idea of life, Suzette has a more poetic and romantic mind. She describes Hanna as a series of boxes inside boxes, each one tied with a more intricate knot than the last. It's well written, I like all the characters and their diverse personalities, and the tension building up to the Pure Ones aka the Nazis was well done. This book continues immediately after the events of the journey, where our protagonist Soren witnessed an event now known as 'The Great Downing', where a bunch of owlets were found on the ground ranting about barn owl or tyto superiority. The second one I read was called The Foster Portfolio. I was most interested in the character of Mr. Foster. At the beginning of the story, he is presented as a man that values hard work so much that even though he is secretly rich by inheritance he chooses to do nothing with the money to earn everything he has by working overtime. In the end, it turns out that he wasn't working overtime but instead going to bars and restaurants to play music. I think that Mr. Foster feels shame around playing the piano since it was something his distant father did. It's a story about Morgan, a quiet girl from a seaside town, and her summer with the selkie (a creature who can transform from seal to human), Keltie. I think that the author did a great job of creating thematical irony with the two main characters. Morgan is a human who has always hidden herself and her interests. While Keltie is a presumably mythical creature, you'd think that she would be the one to hide aspects of herself, but she is anything but that. Keltie is completely open about what she likes and what she does. Keltie even comments on the fact that Morgan is more of a shapeshifter than she is, because Morgan changes into someone else in front of other people.

The drama club has finished their last play of the season with a bang. Real action fighting! This left Legoshi hurt in the process but ended up making him more popular for his amazing "performance". He took out his aggression on his classmate during the play for using rabbits blood to improve his performance. It's basically steroids/drugs for them. After that fiasco, we move into the summer. Legoshi and his friends go into town now that they have free time and they stubble upon the black market after getting lost. They sell meat, which is illegal as carnivores and herbivores live amongst each other. Legoshi's friends want to partake but he refuses. Although, that doesn't stop his body form reacting to the smell of the meat. He ends up overwhelmed with urge and falls over. Soon enough, he gets kidnapped by panda man while he is struggling to hold back. They accomplished this using flecks, tiny metals that particularly in large proportions, mess up an owl's navigation. So Soren, Glyfie, Twilight, Digger, Otulissa, and Eglantine go out to rescue him.

Once they rescue him though, Hitler doesn't approve so he sends 10 owls to kill all of them except Ezylryb because they believe him to be useful for the Nazis aka the Pure Ones. An intense battle follows and ends in the Band successfully rescuing Ezylryb and unmasking Metal Beak who turned out to be Soren's brother Kludd.

If I had to change anything it'd be the Pure Ones' plan. Like what? It's bad enough that the band has a big muscular dude that terrified and distracted all of the attacking Nazis. It's another that 2 more allies of the Band joined in. Also, they have an advantage because they have access to burning branches that can be used as weapons. Just send your entire army out there at that point. This is a ya fantasy that emulates harry potter, but with more mature characters and themes. It is the third and longest book in this series and also the last. Today I analyzed the author's use of setting. It was an unusually good part of the story to do this with because the settings are so mundane yet so relevant to the story. "I bolt and chain my front door. I don't have any furniture to shove against it" This quote is the character indirectly voicing their thoughts. He has just moved out, and run away from his friends and community to try to start something new. This quote shows how unsafe and out of place he feels in his new flat. "I take off my trench coat. There's nowhere to hang it" similarly this quote shows that the things this character had come to rely on are now gone. The author spent the first 169 pages describing Savannah, Georgia - its restored mansions, the lovely green squares, the historic cemetery, and the colorful characters who lived there in the early 1980's. However, a brown fish owl saves him and takes care of him until he's recovered as he's a Pilgrim and that's what they do. After feasting on a nice succulent vole which he's given, he quickly kills him. Slicing his face in half in "a blizzard of blood and feathers" as it was put. An owl named Mist witnesses this though.

Martin is mostly doing the talking but then Twilight joins in and he's like "Yeah we're a bunch of humble owls who need a leader!" Now I don't know about you, but the way he says it could've blown their cover. So if I had to give a character any advice from what I've read, it would be for Twilight. They spent emotional moments there together as children, and now those moments lack the sweetness of those previous. This ties back to the theme of how many things will change, and maybe for the worse, that you cannot control. The second way it ties into the story is that it represents the main character Tsugu. The common phrase "black sheep" is used to describe someone who's out of place (usually used in a negative context). Tsugu is the odd-one-out of her friends from childhood. They've become destructive to themselves and others from their past traumas, while Tsugu continues to try her best to see the good in life and others. Thus, making her much more than a black sheep. He quickly pointed his gun at the gang leaders head to protect Haru; he would do anything to protect her. He fires his gun and quickly the other gang members come rushing in. After seeing what Louis had done, they were clueless as of what to do. Their leader had just been murdered by a tiny deer. Louis yelled at the gang of lions to start eating him and to "get it over with." But the gang wanted to do the opposite, they wanted to make Louis the new leader of the Shishigumi after seeing how powerful he was. Louis hesitated but, he realized he would rather feel important and have purpose then get eaten alive.

Beatrice claims that he is stupid and incapable of doing anything, including fighting in war. Beatrice ends up dancing with Benedick, little to her knowledge because he claims to be someone else from town. Beatrice continues to talk badly upon Benedick to his face. The book follows four college roommates after they graduate, primarily focusing on Jude. Jude is a troubled soul with a mysterious and tormenting background and history. One of his main struggles involves dealing with his chronic pain resulting from a car crash he was in during his teenage years, as well as accepting help and support from his friends and doctors. The section that I was able to read during this chunk of time follows Jude on his way back home after work (he works in a law firm). Because of an infection in his right leg, Jude has been using a wheelchair.

The elevator is broken, and Jude is forced to find a way to get into his abode without the use of it. Jude refuses to call anyone, believing that he should not inconvenience them due to his own shortfalls. Jude inches himself up the stairs to his apartment, as well as carrying his folded wheelchair and suitcase.

Jude makes his way into his apartment, but when his roommate finds him in the apartment, Jude is seized up in the fetal position and barely conscious. This kind of occurrence is not rare for Jude, and he feels incredibly guilty for inconveniencing and scaring his loved ones in such a way. I am several chapters in, and so far I am enjoying it. The writing is flowery and atmospheric which is fitting for the spring. So far I have been introduced to three characters, Dorian Gray, Basil Hallward, and Lord Henry. Hallward is a talented painter, who is extremely protective over others viewing his creations. Hallward isn't overly concerned about making money so he doesn't feel the need to exhibit or sell his artwork. He does this because he considers his paintings to be an essential part of himself that are difficult to part from. Dorian Gray is Basil Hallward's current muse, who he has just finished an immaculate portrait of. There seems to be a fairly homoerotic interest in Dorian on Basil's part, although Dorian's objective beauty is confirmed by all those who surround him. Although beautiful, Dorian is also easily swayed and concerned with the material. Lord Henry is a friend of Basil who stops in to view the finished piece. Henry begins to go on a monologue about Dorian's beauty and how it will shrivel as he ages, about how he will ultimately become deformed by his years. This book is a beautiful sci-fi fantasy graphic novel. I liked the techniques that Tillie uses to introduce us to the world she has designed. She starts off by throwing you straight into the world. She gives you no back story in the beginning and just leaves you to be in awe of the beautiful setting she has built. Later she goes on to develop the main character through flashbacks. She also does and excellent job of introducing us to a decent sized cast of characters, all at once, by giving us visual clues about their personality. We see a scene where two of the main cast are sleeping in bunk beds. One of the characters is sleeping in a disheveled bed with her arm hanging off the side. the other is sleeping on their back in a well made bed. He is one of the four in the friend group. The book describes how life from his perspective seems dull. His job working in an office doesn't pay very well and his coworkers wished they had picked something else for a career. He feels ashamed of his identity because his family is rich -he lives with them- and he is mixed. He feels like he doesn't qualify as a black person even though that is apart of him. He has been told by his friend JB, because he is mixed, he doesn't know what the black experience is really like. He is seen as an "insufficient" black person in the eyes of his friend. This is a pretty epic book series so far! I'm gonna convince someone to read these books. First of all, it has a pretty swag film adaptation directed by Zack Snyder that has the best animation I've ever seen and an epic soundtrack too. Two, if you like violent stories this is violent, bloody, and dark! Three, there are parallels to what happened or is happening in our world in this series like Communism, Nazis, Racism and Colorism, discrimination, hierarchies, and war. Four, every time I progress to a new book in the series it just gets better and more interesting in general. The cover includes a broken lollipop. I originally assumed that it was a symbol for Hanna's childhood being "shattered" by her quickly piling mental health issues. But, in my reading, I realized that it is a symbol for Hanna's largest spiral yet. She created a creature based on a book that her father reads to her, and placed it under her bed. While Hanna's mother, Suzette, is cleaning, she finds the mound of items. Because of Hanna's recent aggressive and occult behavior, Suzette assumes that it is some kind of horrific doll, used to show what Hanna wishes to do to her mother. Just like in Hanna's book, the creature has a lollipop arm that is shattered when Suzette breaks it on the ground. When Hanna finds it she is devastated. This is the breaking point for Hanna, and the next few days are disastrous for everyone Hanna comes in contact with. I really liked the technique of flashbacks in this book and the way the author uses them. It's an interesting device to use but I feel like a lot of authors who use it implement it poorly. Tillie Walden treats her flashbacks as two different stories that have intermingled plots with a conclusion related to both of them. My job was to compare both books and how they did things.

ok so basically, Giant Squid is visually stunning. On every page, I loved to look at every single little detail within each illustration. The pictures are also telling a story of some kind instead of being random. Not only that but this book literally has a Prologue leading to a title sequence which caught me off guard. The other book I looked at is 'Octopuses and Squid' by Tori Miller. The way how the information is presented here is by no means bad, it's just that I got distracted every now and then whereas with Giant Squid I didn't.
