The brothers started experimenting with lighter than air devices after observing that heated air flowing directed into a paper or fabric bag made the bag rise. After several successful tests, they decided to make a public demonstration.
In September 1783, the Montgolfiers sent a Duck, Sheep, Rooster into the air to test their hot air balloon design, those animals were the world's first first air passengers.

Hot air is less dense than cold air the heated air causes the balloon to rise simply because it is lighter than the same amount of cold air. Buoyancy is an upwards force that the air uses, and it helps hot-air balloons to stay in the air. A hot air balloon uses a burner to heat up the air inside the balloon.
