Wound Healing at it's Best

Wound healing can be simple or very complicated in some cases. Co-morbidities such as diabetes and peripheral vascular disease can cause catastrophic changes to the most simplest of wounds.

Wearable devices offer new innovations with wound healing. "We present in this work a multiplexed cutaneous wound monitor, implemented using a triangulated approach involving a combination of high-resistive silicon (HR-Si)-based conductometric biosensors, a potentiometric pH sensor, and a temperature sensor in monitoring the process of wound healing" (Gangarth, et al., 2025). The device works by continuously monitoring "levels of CRP and IL-6 inflammation biomarkers, pH levels, and temperature values at the localized site of the wound bed" Gangarth, et al., 2025. This information is sent via bluetooth to the patient's provider.

This device can be a game changer when monitoring wounds. It can give real time information to providers about their patients without the patient leaving their own home. It can aid in preventing wound infections and possibly sepsis. Early detection of wound complications can save lives and time. It could also prevent repeat surgeries for wound debridement by catching infections early.

If the device is placed on top of a wound dressing, there is a chance that it can be lost or out of place. This could cause an inability for the device to obtain accurate information. As with any technology the device can also malfunction with errors and become more of a burden of a patient that has to seek help.

The patient population who suffers from recurrent wound infections is large. Some patients provide poor wound care on their own in their home environments. It is difficult for patients to be vigilant and report changes to wounds in a timely manner. A wearable device is ideal.
