Heyjin I read an article “Howard Schultz’s formula for Starbucks” in my class today. Before the reading, we had discussed some questions about fast food chains and I had not think that topic deeply so, when I tried to say my ideas, it took some time. The article was, of course, about Schultz and Starbucks and his thinking of social responsibility was interesting for me. After the break, I learned about “Gerund”. Its form is “verb + ~ing” and it differs from using “~ing” forms as a verb because it is a noun in a sentence. Yolanda said we should listen a lot to have more natural sense to notice which verb needs gerund or infinitive. Every time I do the vocabulary things, I find I have lack of vocabulary. As usual, I found many words that I didn’t know. Maybe I should study harder.

Today, at school during the first lesson we talked about "beauty" and it was really interesting listen differents point of view based on the country that my classmates are from. We talked about style too, and comes out that in Brazil is not common see a guy with short, an other particular was that in Korea it's really appreciate have a young face (baby face).
During the second lesson we started with a low-key activity, we needed to interview our classmate and guess which beef (I don't understand...beef? ) she/he had. It was fun because I didn't guess the problem but my partner she figure out almost immediately. Than we earned more about Starbucks and his policy. It was a really interesting reading, for me, before that, it was just a place where go to buy a espresso or to use Internet. Now, next time I'll enter in a Starbucks I'll appreciate the big work that Mr. Schultz and Co. did for their employees and for us costumers.
In the end, we learned about gerund and infinitive, it was a little bit hard, but might after doing my homework I'll better understand the mechanism.
____________________________
Really good vocabulary! I'm impressed with your reflections! You had a few mistakes with infinitives which we will talk about today! After today, go back and see if you can find a mistake in this journal entry.

Today I learned new vocabularies about Self-Promotion for Introverts in the first class. There were some models of personality traits and we needed to discuss about opposite traits. Two of my classmates and I discussed about the opposite trait of “intellectually curious" and finally we concluded as "intellectually disinterested" Amy was interested in listening to our discussion. It was a little bit hard because the characteristics were hard to define.

The most interesting activity that I did today was interviewing classmates and guessing what had been shown to be flawed. The role play was so exciting and Rodrigo and I inferred from Heyjin’s nationality in it. In addition, I thought again about big companies compared to small companies from the question related to the Starbucks article. It was also interesting and I realized that I need to be more interested in reading articles about society.
______________________________
Great reflection!! I'm curious: do you think you're an introvert? How does that play out in the classroom?

Today I learned about a new religion, it was interesting to see how people can create something so deep as a religion out of the blue. After that we discussed about "social responsibility" I could listen to another points of view from my classmates and make an opinion on my own thanks to that then we started to read about Starbucks was surprising to see how the company works and what's its philosophy. One of the things that I didn't really learned was gerunds it's kinda difficult but I've got the idea of how it works and to conclude the best part of my day was to have the privilege of still pissing off Ms. Kornelsen.
That last sentence made me laugh out loud, thanks for that!
I enjoy reading your thoughts! I had thought that I knew the rule of gerund enough, but I realized that I completely need to make myself familiar with it, specially gerunds as objects of prepositions. I'm going to try to memorize them on my textbook. It was a great practice to use them together in the class. I like to practice what we are learning right away. And I knew some new information about Starbucks. I hadn't deeply thought about Starbucks before, but I was impressed by the owner who always considers of customers and employees.

Today was a great day! In the first class I learned a few new vocabularies that I can use when I'm talking to people, in a more "serious" way, like in a interview or trying to apply in a university, in this class we talked about tips that could help an introvert come out of their shell and take their gems to make them shine, we discussed that introverts don't need to change their personalities, they should use theirs and highlite with their chances. Before the class I had lunch with my friends and it was really fun because all the food that I ordered was spicy (and I didn't know) so we had a lot of fun seeing me crying. On the second class we saw a video talking about Walmart as a bad industry and how it can be a bad influence for the communities, it was sad to see how such a big company can treat their employees however they want. Before watching the video we played that forced us to not say de worlds "no" and "yes" I only had like four tokens left. Then we learned how to use the infinitives and gerunds, but for me it's a little bit hard with the gerunds. After class I went to the beach with my friends and we had to buy an icecream there because the looked delicious, and after that we had to take the bus that was full to go back downtown.

There are not Walmart in Korea so, I didn't know that the company is very mean. Sometimes I think of my consuming can affect to many ways to the economy. I like studying this week's topic because it helps me to think deeper and gives information I didn't know. Actually talking about religions is hard to me, since I don't believe it. I can respect their beliefs, but I don't understand some of their behaviors. Anyway, discussing business is better for me. In the second class, we had some conversations with each others by using infinitives. There were some words we can use both, infinitives and gerunds and some of them can have different meaning depending on the use of those.(I don't know this sentence makes sense......) We played a game that explain the words written on cards and we had to use "to purpose" sentences. Our goal was to win and made it.
As you said, I'm introverted, however the class is okay. I just think slowly and need some more time to answer. To speak much faster than now is one of my goals. To use infinitives and gerunds in my sentence is difficult! I want to be more flexible in English.

Yesterday I started my day very early. First of all I went to the library because my computer was broken and I needed to study for my financial market course. Definitely that was the best part of my day, I really love studying about the financial market. After that I ran to Kaplan to write a bio for Lyz for student ambassadors bio. During my writing I remembered that I should call my father to talk about my plans to come back to Vancouver next year. The time to go to class has come, Yolanda was waiting for us like always. My first class was nice, but the second and third class were better. My favorite part of the class was the game, I love playing games and I always get very excited. For me is the best way to learn, its easy to learn when you are having fun. We finished the class at 5:45, I went to Starbucks with my friend, Muhand. He was asking me for help. We spent one hour at Starbucks, after that I went back home. When I arrived at home my host mom was cooking the dinner, I was surprised because was late and usually she cooks at 5:30/6:00. She told me that she went to a hospital because of an asthma attack, I was scared about her but she said to me that she was fine. That was my day... nothing special, just the end.

I was shocked the number of advertisements Americans watch is 3,000. That's huge. And I learned the deconstruction of ads; story, models, setting, color, sound, copy, details and point of view. Budweiser's commercial was not bad, but I like more refreshing one. Continuing the infinitives, I really don't like some part of English grammars, there are not exact rules so, we have to memorize all as a foreigner. It was sunny day and we went out for selfie activities. I didn't think there would be a group completed it.
Here's my three questions for Yolanda. I don't know well about Costa Rica, could you explain little bit please? Second, what's your favorite animal and why? This question is from one of the Kaplan teachers and when I was asked, I thought it's interesting. Last, I'm going to go back to Korea next week, could you say something to me?
Hm.. How to explain Costa Rica? It's called the Switzerland of Central America because its mountainous, neutral and the most financially stable. The people are really warm and friendly and it is very easy to get invited to parties or to someone's house (not like Canada). The beaches are gorgeous! It is getting a little expensive for Ticos (the adjective for Costa Rican) because the food prices are soaring but the wages are not. Also, more and more drugs are going through Costa Rica from South America to the USA so that's not good! But it's still beautiful and warm and I love it!
My favorite animal is the goat cuz I think it's soooooo cute and I love the way it climbs around and I love the noises it makes. My first pet ever was a goat ( I was around 5 years old) so maybe that's also why I like it. I also love the Owl because my husband's last name is Rowell and my nephew couldn't pronounce it so he always called him Mr. Owl and it was really cute and it fit him because my husband is quite, and super smart and loves to be awake at night and likes to watch people...and the Owl is like our 'couple animal" (haha I know...so cheesy).
You're going back next week already? So soon! I hope that you enjoyed your time here and made friends and have great memories to take back with you! I also hope that English became more than just grammar or something you have to learn for school or work. I think that language opens up doors to understanding other cultures and other people and I hope that English will be a bridge to other parts of the world for you and something that is fun and meaningful, not just terrible grammar and memorizing infinitives and gerunds! Remember, most English speakers are not native speakers so it's not important to become a native speaker just to use it however you need to use it!

Yesterday I started my day early to do my specific class homework then I went to downtown to eat something after that I went to my first class and learn new idioms and contrast-comparasion words. In Ms. Kornelsen's class I learned more about advertisements and their occultism. I usually don't pay attention to commercials but I know they have their psychology to reach the masses even unconsciously. The best part of the day was the outside game, it was really funny seeing Cecilia asking strangers for pictures. In the end I went to play football, unfortunately we lost and that was all.
Which is your favorite book?*
Where would you like to live?*
What language would you like to learn?*
Hm...I'd love to live in London (I'd love to live everywhere for a year or two).I wish I was fluent in German but I think Chinese is the most relevant language to learn (after English and Spanish of course).
Now the hard question: I have many favourites. When I was young it was probably Chronicles of Narnia and Anne of Green Gables. As a teenager I loved all WWII historical novels like the Zion Covenant by Bodie Thoene. In uni, Brave New World was my favorite. Since then I don't really have ONE that stands out...I enjoyed 84 Charing Cross (A book about books!) and I've gotten into Dystopian Sci-Fi: like News from Gardenia by Robert Llewellyn and I love Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (probably my favorite from the last few years). Right now I'm reading Himself which is really beautifully descriptive. Sigh, DON"T ASK ME ABOUT BOOKS CUZ I WONT SHUT UP

Today my day started really early, first things on the morning I went for a run at my neighbourhood and then went back home and had breakfast, for me if I start the day like these then I would have energy for all the day and I will be happy. How do you like to start your day?
After that, i went to downtown to have lunch with my friends, yesterday I had a sandwich at a food truck that was really good. What it's your favorite food truck in Robson square?
After eating i went to my specific class and we talked about historical problems and how an introvert can express himself. after that class I had the second class that was really fun because we went out and asked strangers certain questions and then we had to take a selfie with them, there was this little guy that didn't want to take a picture and he talked Spanish so I persuade him to agree and we took it, he was a sweatheart. After that I went with my roomate to the soccer match and after that I went home to go to sleep. Do you speak Spanish fluently?
