In Athens, homes were built around the courtyard. The courtyards were for worshiping, entertainment, and family gatherings. There were different rooms in the house that included an office, additional storage rooms ,and bedrooms. The husband had a room to relax that was called an “ANDRON” ,(man cave) while the wife had to be in a completely different side of the house. When children were born in Athens, their father was responsible for inspecting their health. If the child was born sick or sometimes even a girl, the had permission by the government to leave them outside to die in the cold. Although this seems cruel, it was actually very hard for the father to make this decision, as children were loved by their parents. All children were taken care of by the mother and sometimes a nanny. Playtime was valued in Athens. Children in ancient Athens had many toys, the children often played games together.Families ate meals together, but dinner was the biggest meal of the day. Athenians ate more fish than any other civilization because of the Mediterranean sea. They also ate a variety of fruits and vegetables. The Greeks drank wine but they did not drink it when it was straight from the bottle because it was seen as uncivilized so they put a little amount of water and mixed the water and wine. In conclusion the daily life in Athens seems both easy and relaxing.
