When William Shakespeare had written Macbeth, the people of the time were extremely superstitious. They thought that witches and witchcraft were the forces behind crop failure, livestock illnesses and the tragic things that happened at that time. Witches were often described to be old ladies who lived alone. Witches generally had pets such as frogs, cats, pigs and owls which demons or "familiars" resided in. Witches were also believed to have been able to prophesy and were the agents that worked for Satan's doing. Witches were able to fly and create spells to curse people or things. If a person was accused of being a witch, they were often executed and could not defend themselves.
