I hope we can someday see test scores matter less than they do now. I wonder how this could happen in Chicago without huge systemic change, though, because of the selective enrollment process for high school. As long as these scores matter so much for selective enrollment, it might be difficult for us to emphasize them less in school because we want to set our students up to go to the schools they want to in high school. I feel that this would need to change from the top up. However, I really feel that this would be monumental for our students as it would allow us as teachers to focus on other parts of students' education, and it would allow us to work more with SEL learning as well as let our students drive their learning and have a more open-ended learning that is driven by their interests and passions. It is important that we emphasize these things anyway, but we could do so even more if standardized tests like the NWEA were less crucial and influential for students and their futures.

What is something that came out of tonight's discussion you would like to share with the whole group?

Learned a lot about how much the English as a second language is also a major issue with teaching. Someone shared about their personal experience about being Spanish and coming into a classroom that did not support another language. He was held back and put in special education classes because he could not keep up with the rest of the English speaking classmates.

He went into TFA and wanted to be involved in this and was. He always tries to support these students, but it is very difficult. Feels like cultural and language barriers puts students on a downward track that is systematically keeping equity from happening in education

Sadly incredible how many TFA teachers are going into Special Education (50%+) because of the need

Teachers do not feel adequately equipped to teach these classes

Mental Health – there seems to be a major lack of adequate mental health resources for teachers. Especially those in TFA who are entering into their first job and going to a very intense, high burnout job.

Hours are very high

Doing master degree and other classes on top of teaching and lesson planning seems like too much

Further, there is an empathy component that these teachers have with their kids

Feeling like they are letting down their kids is putting teachers in a very difficult spot

I think this is a key issue and needs to be taken seriously in how to improve this going forward

What questions do you still have or want to explore further?

Mental Illness piece – I want to understand more about what resources are available and what could be possible

In Finance, we had an EAP (Employee Assistance program) that allowed for us to get free support

Seems important that this happens now

English as a Second language trends

How do we get more people to want to have conversations like this about educational equity?

I think this was my main takeaway from the conversation on what education could look like in 2040

This is a very difficult and broad question

There seem to be so many different issues and potential answers, but I think there is no real picture or example of what is the best way

There is no example in the world that anyone can point to as the way that education should be

This makes me believe that this will be a very difficult process to perfect, so it is going to be very iterative

Nevertheless, I think what the most important thing that can happen by 2040 is that people are talking about education as one of the top if not the top focal point of political and social conversations

Until everyone is having the conversations that we are having about education equity and are aware instead of ignorant about what is going on, there will likely be no change

There is likely no 1 way that the education system should be, so I think it’s going to take a ton of trial and error, but that trial and error needs to also have tremendous amount of focus to make sure the right amount of resources are being dedicated
