My Pre-K class and I would hold a Morning Meeting each day to discuss the plan for the day, record the calendar and weather, and share their answers for Question of the Day. My Pre-K students couldn't quite accomplish the "quiet lips and body" that was necessary for Morning Meeting to go smoothly. Despite talking about what quiet lips and a quiet body looked like, the students continued to talk and wiggle. My verbal reminders frustrated me and I would lose track of the meeting, and the students who were making good choices were distracted.

Stars!

I hired "paper stars" to get the task of quiet lips and bodies accomplished for Morning Meeting. When I saw a student sitting appropriately and making a good choice, I would silently hand them a star, without interrupting the meeting. Suddenly, everyone wanted a star and caught on as to how to earn one. As it turns out, 4 and 5 year olds love being rewarded for making good choices, even if the reward is a paper star! The students couldn't wait to collect stars each morning and count how many they earned.

My job for my students is to keep a positive relationship with them. I want them to know that I love seeing them succeed, and they want to know that I see them making good choices and am proud of them. Another job of mine is to keep them engaged and to think on their level when it comes to accomplishing a task -- how does a Pre-K student think? That way, my expectations for them are achievable and they have the confidence to reach those goals.
