Metabolic rift conceptualizes the ecological crisis tendencies developed under capitalism. It describes the relationship between humans and nature, and more specifically the complex and dynamic interactions between humans and nature, resulting from human labour and production. Hornborg identified that throughout history, human consumption, and therefore labour, drove humans to appropriate nature to satisfy their needs. Therefore, metabolic rift outlines a universal and ongoing relationship of human consumption.

Hornborg argued that metabolic rift resulted in an environmental load displacement and an ecologically unequal exchange. This is because the way humans are acting under industrial capitalism does not match social metabolism (processes undertaken are not those that are necessary for the society's continued existence)
