1915- The Tank

The Tank was invented in 1915 because some British/Canadian military officers wanted a vehicle or an object that can cross no-mans land, run through barbed wire and run through trenches easily and quickly. In 1915, the British established a secret "landship committee" to study the military prospects of this new vehicle. The original name for the tank was "landship". The British code-named this new vehicle the "Tank" because they did not want the germans to know what they were doing. Canada, being in the British commonwealth and with them during the war, the British gifted them the tank to use. The first prototype was completed and put on the front line in mid-1916.

In 1918, Canadian commercial radio got its start, going through many experiments before its initial release. The name of company that sent the very first radio signal in Canada was named the "Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company Of Canada". This company ran many tests and experiments in its rudimentary Montreal facility. Marconi received Canada's very first radio license for an XWA station in December 1919. Exactly one year later in December 1920, regular radio transmissions started. This gave life to what we know as the radio where millions of people get information, listen to music, and entertain themselves. (Parks Canada Agency)

Made by Dr. Fredrick Banting and his team at UofT Improved the lives of diabetics worldwide. The drug produced hormones by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar. Dr. Banting and his team won the Nobel prize for this invention a year later. Insulin is the key factor as to why a lot of diabetics are doing well today. Even though Insulin did not wipe down diabetes, it helped control its spread. This powerful drug will mostly be found in regular medical medicines because of what it does for the body. Through studies, people will take to insulin differently. There are also a lot of controversies and mixed opinions about insulin and what it does because in the end, insulin can become addicting and harmful if not used properly. (Diabetes UK)

The variable pitch propeller was first constructed in 1918 but was not released until 1922, which is why it is event 5.

The variable pitch propeller first came to life in 1918 by a man named Rupert Turnbull. The pitch propeller adjusts the angle where the propeller blades cut through the air. It is safe and efficient at all speeds. It allows max power taking off, and landing. It allowed the craft to go long distances. This device would become essential for airplanes and aviation devices Turnbull finished his design for the pitch-propeller and released it to the public in 1922. It was tested on a royal canadian air force avro 504K at camp broaden The experiment took place in 1927. in 1929, the rights for the pitch-propeller went to Bristol Aeroplane and the curtiss-wright's corp(American company) Without Turnbull and his genius idea, Airplanes would not exist, motorboats would not exist, and many lives would be destroyed. Turnbull's invention lead to thousands of people being saved and helped during the second world war. (“Wallace Rupert Turnbull | the Canadian Encyclopedia”)

A snowblower is a mechanical device that clears snow from a surface by collecting it and then throwing it into another location invented in 1925 in Quebec by a man named Arthur Sicard it contains an auger which is a corkscrew-shaped blade of metal, rubber, or sometimes plastic these machines have helped and saved many Canadians from being trapped by large amounts of snow on the road or in their driveway. The snow Blower made it much easier for Canadians and people around the world to get rid of snow quickly as fast. This reduced the number of people trapped in their homes after a big snow fall. (“Snow Blower | the Canadian Encyclopedia”)

The Canadian national railway service revived the project in the 1920s, this project was not easy and it was full of tough roadblocks and challenges. Muskeg and outcrops led to engineering difficulties. There were also financing problems as this mega project took a lot of money to build. There were overshadowing concerns that this project would not be completed. There was a branch line that was built to Flin Flon in 1928, the railway was finally completed when the final piece was expanded to Churchill in 1929. The trans Canadian railway was the primary source for transporting goods and other items across the country in the shortest amount of time possible. (“Technological and Scientific Developments in Canada from 1914 to 1929 Timeline.”)

The invention that demonstrated continuity and change is the invention of insulin. Insulin was invented in 1922 and it was meant to treat patients with diabetes. Insulin has changed over the years and scientists have continued to study how insulin works. The medicine has evolved from needles, to liquid, to chewable pills and to normal pills. At first, insulin was looked at uncertainty by most individuals, that is why it kept on changing and evolving into many forms. Insulin has reduced deaths and illnesses of diabetes.

The event/invention that demonstrates cause and consequence the most is the invention of the Tank. When the tank was invented in 1915, it was meant to travel across no man's land and penetrate barbed wire. The Tank was mainly used for this, however, it also caused mass destruction and many deaths. The tank is one of the most lethal and scary weapons in war. The cause /reasoning of building and inventing the tank was really good, soldiers needed to get across no-man's land quicker and safer. The consequences of the tanks' overpowered machinery led to soldiers getting run over, mass destruction to nearby cities and towns and it created a lot of fear.
