In the song “Confident”, Demi Lovato describes the confidence that she is feeling in herself. The song shows that even though society expects women to not be outspoken or confident Demi asks “ wrong with being confident?” She empowers a person to be confident in their thoughts and opinions. This reflects the importance of confidence because it empowers people to be like transcendentalists in a way where they don’t really care what society thinks, and they are comfortable in themselves and their thoughts.

A transcendentalist would encourage me to change my position as many times as I wanted to and that I should not care about what over people think. A person who continually stays the same is not the type of person who is a transcendentalist. The central values of transcendentalism fully support the changing of my position in my essay from the first draft to the second. These values preach free thought, self-reliance, and confidence. While living by these values, a transcendentalist would tell me to speak my mind, to believe in myself, and to be confident in my words. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a leader in transcendentalism, believed that “A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace” (“Self-Reliance,” Emerson). Emerson would encourage me to rewrite my essay and put my opinion in it, no matter what I said before. I should also do the best that I can, regardless of my previous opinion.
