A person who continually stays the same is not the type of person who is a transcendentalist. The central values of transcendentalism fully support the changing of my position in my essay from the first draft to the second. These values preach free thought, self-reliance, and confidence. While living by these values, a transcendentalist would tell me to speak my mind, to believe in myself, and to be confident in my words. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a leader in transcendentalism, believed that “A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace” (“Self-Reliance,” Emerson). Emerson would encourage me to rewrite my essay and put my opinion in it, no matter what I said before.
