I personally think history is one of the most important subjects to teach in primary! It is essential that the children know not only our country's vast amount of history, e.g world wars, Victorian England and its importance on the country we have today, colonisation etc. But it is also important for them to know global history e.g African monarch history or the Shang dynasty of 1250BC. It is important for children to learn about history from all over the world to understand how far the world has come and understand how history has helped shapes different cultures around the world today. Learning about our history also helps children to understand not what to do in their own lives or gives examples of key people in history that we should celebrate. E.g Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and William history. I also think that history can easily be embedded into other areas and subjects in school to improve learning there, e.g poets in English or significant findings or people in Science. This means that history is all around us and children should be heavily exposed to this.

I believe history can show the children how important their own opinions are and how their voices can be heard after learning about individuals that helped todays world become how it is now. Learning from the past can then encourage the children to become active learners, creating solutions and changes in their heads that they believe can make the world a better place. Learning the achievements and failures that England has been through, as well as other countries, will allow the children to have a deeper understanding of their lives today.

I think we teach history because it gives children and understanding on what the world was like before them. It helps them to realise why the world is the way it is in modern day. History allows children to develop analytical skills and strengthen their critical thinking. History also provides opportunities for children to develop their research skills as history involves conducting research into a variety of events and people. Knowledge of the past is extremely important because it is these events that have the shaped the world and made it what it is now. Children should know how previous events have had a direct impact on events that are happening in present times. Teaching children about the past will give them an appreciation for the world and the advantages that have come since.
