In The Giver, they refer to their house as a "dwelling" only. Explain why you think this might be. Think about why calling your "dwelling" a home would be changed for sameness in this community.

They may refer to their houses as dwellings because when they are younger, they probably were only taught to call it a dwelling and not a home so that people didn't have the choice to call it a home or dwelling and they stuck with one name to keep it similar. When you call your house a home, it creates sentimental value. According to previous chapters, they don't like people getting attached to things.

They might refer to their house as a "dwelling" because they don't know any better and they were probably raised that way. Calling my "dwelling" a home would be changed for sameness in this community because not many people in the community say home, they only know it as a place they live in. Nothing special about it when it's just a "dwelling," also if you called it a home, some people would be confused.

They might refer to their houses as dwellings because they are taught to do that. Maybe the word dwelling sounds better and more professional. They might see the house only as a residence, not a house that they have worked for, but instead a residence that had been given to them. The house itself might not even be theirs. Maybe the community is really old, maybe it existed in the 1800s, when the word dwelling was very popular, or they might still be living with the culture of the 1800s.

I think that they refer to their house as a dwelling because that is where they live. Also, they might be given a house instead of having to buy one for their family unit. Lastly they might have been taught that a dwelling is where they will live their life. If one person called it a home, and another called it a dwelling, that would break the sameness barrier and it could confuse people.

In our society, a home is thought to be a private property, or something privately owned by an individual. This has caused a lot of conflict in the U.S. in terms of trespassing and expenses. This probably why they changed it to "dwelling". A dwelling is only a place where someone lives. There isn't really an indication that it should be privately owned. All houses are probably assigned to families and supervised by the government. This increases the unity of the community and enforces sameness.

I think they call it a dwelling because they grew up learning it that way because all the other generations passed it down. It is also a higher vocabulary word than home and the community wants them to be smarter and use the best words they can. They also didn't have to work for their home so it is more of their living space then something they bought. Some people calling it a house and other people calling it a dwelling would confuse people because they wouldn't know what is it and they are no longer saying the same word.
