I remember an incident from 1999 with Amadou Diallo, an African student in NY who was killed by the police because they assumed he had a gun. It turned out he was try to take out his wallet to share his ID. I was totally distraught that this could happen without the officers taking time to ensure what he was taking from his pocket. Officer training needs to be improved.

In 2012, a young black man was murdered in my town. He and his brother were hanging out with two white girls in the basement of one of the white girls' homes. The father came down the stairs with a pistol, claims a fight ensued, and he shot at both boys killing one of them. The man who did the shooting only served 365 days in the county jail for the murder. He did not receive a just sentence and the case was not handled like it should have been.

I once witnessed an incident of racial discrimination at school. A student made a derogatory remark about another student's hair and laughed. The student on the receiving end of the comment looked visibly hurt and ashamed.

I felt angry and upset by what I had witnessed. I think that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity regardless of their skin color, ethnicity, or background.

I wish that more people would speak up against such behavior when they witness it. I also think that schools need to continue to educate children on kindness, fairness, and empathy towards those who are different from them. Only then can we hope to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

Racial Profiling- I've watched a black teenager be followed around the store and pictures were being taken of him. I'm sure they thought he was going to steal.
