How would you suggest scientists and researchers initiate or get involved with these conversations about visualization for the importance of education? Interdisciplinary work is increasingly important, especially when considering public outreach, but what are the barriers we should be aware of?

What are tips (or lessons learned) for initiating art and physics projects at other physics institutions, such as getting funding and buy-in from administrators and colleagues? - I'm thinking of institutions that are smaller/have different funding - so maybe like a more traditional department, instead of a national physics facility?

johan.sebastian.bonilla@cern.ch

Self-Sufficiency: Avoid the fallacy and collaborate with experts. We tend to think that we can learn something and immediately apply it, expecting the performance we usually produce in our own field of expertise. This may be an adequate perspective to take within your field, but it is important to recognize the expertise and experience of artists; they know way better than scientists how to manifest their ideas and how the public may react.

Mutual Respect and Genuine Interest: Artists are experts who perform research, they hypothesize, experiment, and adjust based on their observations just like scientists normally do. However Artists’ methods and tools can be just as complex and difficult to understand as any scientists’ works. It is important to recognize this, to understand that artists are experts and deserve respect. If all parties involved see themselves as equal (e.g. not using an artist as a means to an end of getting a grant) the synergy will more naturally happen. Just like scientists want people to be interested and amazed at their work, the same goes for Artists. When you work with an artists it is important to find genuine interest in their work and style, just as it is important for the artists to find the science intriguing.

Community: One of the main reasons it is difficult for a physicist to find and work with an artists is the lack of community. This is also true about scientists to the general public. We in this seminar are building a community ourselves. It is important to keep in mind how to build a sense of community when trying to communicate abstract concepts to someone else outside your field. It is important to create a space that allows for vulnerability, trust, and empathy in order to successfully communicate and adopt ideas.
