.) A raster image just shows the pixels of an image, and the computer has no idea what image those pixels make. In an ASCII representation, the computer knows that there is text, and where and what that text is. This makes it easier to search a document for words or detect spam.
.) A lossless representation loses nothing in the conversion, and is a perfect duplicate with no degradation in quality. However, it also takes up more space. A lossy representation can take up much less space, at the cost of quality. Sometimes a lossy representation is all that's needed, as the loss of detail may be negligible, but other times it may be essential for an image to be copied perfectly.
.) Steganography involves hiding information in plain sight in a seemingly innocuous document so that only the intended recipient will understand the hidden message. It can be done using the first letter of words or by hiding the text by making it the same color as the page behind it, among many other methods.
.) Retouching an image can make it appear to be something that it is not. This can be used to tamper with evidence in a case. It is also possible to make legal representations of things that would normally be illegal. The book uses the example of child pornography, as the Supreme Court ruled that digital representations of it were legal as long as no real children were harmed.
.) A camera with more megapixels creates higher quality images. While this won't fix a blurry image, it makes a clear one more detailed.
.) The Domesday Book was meant to be a digital representation that would last for hundreds of years, but it was nearly lost in only 15. Technology advanced so quickly that the previous methods of storing information digitally were replaced and nearly lost to time. While paper can last for hundreds or even thousands of years, digital representations of data lose relevancy in a fraction of the amount of time and become illegible. Care must be taken to ensure that rapid progress forward does not mean the total erasure of valuable knowledge from the past.
