After reviewing the materials, my best take away was that self-care is actually an ethical mandate; therefore, we should not feel guilty for taking time to heal ourselves. Another big take away was the very real possibility of secondhand depression which has all the symptoms of clinical depression. That was rather concerning to me.

Reflection on the Importance of Self Care

Professional burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondhand depression can easily sneak up on a school counselor. One of the most important things is to first become aware of the possibility burnout. That would allow you to recognize they symptoms. The school environment can be a very difficult place. While the students are suppose to be the focus, other requirements, such as the demands of administration, wear on you. It can also be busy and chaotic at times. I can see how a counselor might feel like they are not allowed to engage in self-care and like they have to keep it private. But, if we are to last in this field and maintain our own mental health, self care is a must.

My two strategies for self-care would be focusing on my physical health through proper nutrition and exercise and mini breaks where I am alone to journal, read, or just meditate.

I have a history of putting my physical health on hold when I am stressed; it's almost self-punishing. I love to exercise and enjoy healthy eating. However, when I am busy with school or work, I feel like I'm not suppose to take time out for exercise or meal prep, or I'm slacking or procrastinating. As a result, my physical health suffers. The same is true for the mini breaks. My conference is at the end of the day, so I no longer get the midday break I loved. Looking back, shutting my door and having a moment alone to drink a cup of coffee and journal was mentally refreshing, even if it was only 20 minutes.

Short mini-breaks to read, journal, meditate, or just rest would benefit me throughout the day. This may be a challenge as it is difficult to "escape" in the school environment.
