Rousseau lived in Geneva with his dad and older brother. After his mother's death, his older brother ran away. He and his dad stayed in Geneva but his dad got into a fight with the French captain so he had to go to prison. That left Jean-Jacques by himself so his uncle got Jean's cousin and himself to study at the village of Bosey. Then, in 1728 he went to Annecy. After that he wanted to become a musician and composer so he went to Paris.

Rousseau states that government is a contract. Rosseuau says that the contract between the government and the people is called a "social contract". Rousseau said just like John Locke said the governments job is to protect our basic rights of life, liberty, and property and if the government doesn't do it, then the people can back out of the contract since they have a right. They can make a new government for themselves.

This piece is one of his most famous works. A Discourse on the Science and Arts won an essay contest conducted by the Academy of Dijon in 1750. Rousseau says in this work that the progression of the sciences and arts has caused the corruption of virtue and morality. This piece is how Jean-Jaques Rousseau became famous.

The main idea in this passage is that human beings are basically good by nature, but were corrupted by the complicated historical events that resulted in present day civil society.

Jean-Jacques Rosseau had philosophies that impacted US government. Rosseau's work in the social contract says that government should exist to protect citizens. He believed government should be good for citizens as a whole but also for individuals. He says the people agree to allow the government to have power to govern the people but the government must protect the people's rights. This is how we are governed today.
