I think that recognizing informal knowlege is important. my doubts concerns the ability of each student to face challneges different from what they can do in their life. doesn't school have to give each advice to face every day life? IO believe that group team learning is necessary to develop social competences and to help students better understand even because of the use of a simple language

However I have to agree with the comments posted, as teacher, we don´t always have the freedom or resources to do this. Implementing this type of learning we will have less absenteeism and less classroom management issues. We ave to start to think out of the box

In many schools, you are not even allowed to have phones within school and publishing the final project online could have some safeguarding issues. These kind of learning forms are challenging, involve collaboration and the usage a lot exciting IT tools. However, they are not easy to carry out as they need a lot of preparation, gadgets provided by the school, flexible timetable and a kind of teachers' freedom to deliver different sorts of "alternative" lessons, which might include taking kids outside the institution. In my country there is a rigid syllabus and teachers' freedom is very limited

I think informal learning is possible only after a formal period in class to teach students what type of instruments and materials we need, how to use them properly and what the goal of our projects is. I teach at a Middle school and carry all my classes out into the garden in order to experiment first is impossible, unthinkable and teachers need to be really brave, too. Anyway, I believe informal teaching and learning is something we strongly need with today's children and students at school.

They are accurate examples of Future Classroom Scenarios as they take into account many premises of what the process of teaching and learning must be in the 21st century. Both projects are interdisciplinary because they involve more than one subject. They are also cross-curricular since children can develop many skills. Children can also develop multiple intelligences. In short, they are innovative, realistic and challenging.

The activities are undoubtedly engaging and relevant to the learners. Finally, they include 21 Century skills. When it comes to Con's, their implementation in schools needs the involvement of the all the actors, including teachers, principals, administration and stakeholders as well as policy makers. In a nutshell, in order to Future Scenario like these to become actual learning environments in our schools we need a dramatic change in attitude and vision

I was a pioneer in the classes where I taught, I always tried to get pupils to learn about the potential of technology and to use them to study and deepen ... discover a new way of learning. But even today it is so much talk of classes 4.0, I have to give up in front of a slow or non-existent connection, outdated PCs, lack of a real and effective technical assistance. This unfortunately is the reality.
So I think before you implement this beautiful teaching, governments should improve or enhance the resources.

Often, it is referred to as learning by experience or just as experience. For all learners this includes heuristic language building, socialization, inculturation, and play. Informal learning is a pervasive , in contrast with the traditional view of teacher-centered learning via knowledge acquisition.

Learning is everywhere and these two videos give us a great example that there are lot of choices and possibilities both to teach and learn outside the classroom. It´s nice to see how traditional teaching has changed over the years!

The first video is a fantastic example of how informal learning it´s also an essential part of children´s education, not just what you learn at school. I really liked the way these personal and informal experiences were considered and included on a more ‘formal’ education and how the teacher can help to make this happen. It means that we need to have a more open mind but it can be a great way to discover our pupil’s potential.

I also find interesting the activities shown in the second video because they provide a good example of collaborative learning in which children are motivated and engaged towards a common goal. I think these activities are great if you can make them happen. I mean that sometimes more than a question of leaving your comfort zone as a teacher, it´s also a question of taking into account you possibilities in terms of timing, groups, support, subject, resources… In my case, being a MFL teacher with short sessions and lot of groups (4-11 years old), it´s quite tricky to set up collaborative projects such as the one shown in the second video (unless I am working on a particular eTwinning project) but I think, depending on your reality you can try to carry out simple collaborative activites and also see the beneficts.

Taking informal learning into account can help a lot of students who are not doing well at school improve their academic results and their self-esteem. Besides, in today's society, with so many cultural backgrounds, there are a lot of migrant students (and adults as well) capable of doing of a lot of things that have to be taken into consideration.
However, there may be many difficulties in the actual practice, such as lack of time to observe students, high ratios in schools in Madrid and the burocratic or legal part of it.
And regarding outdoor study projects, I consider there are subjects easier to develop in such way than others. And that Primary or Lower secondary education are easier to project like this than the upper secondary.
Another difficulty I find is manageing with discipline.
However, learning in nature and being allowed to experience findings on one's skin is what should be: more real experiences, actual handleing, being exposed to what reality is has always been much more educative than being told what things look like.
Hopefully, I will learn how to cope with all this in the next chapters.

We realized that by suiting the training programs and providing individual support, we could make learning easier and increase the individual performance.

These types of learning allow students to see an evolution in the final results due to their performance, an evolution in the competences inherent to their performance, such as the "tacit knowledge ", that is, the knowledge that underlies the task, but which is only learned with experience in carrying out the same task. We must not forget that interaction with colleagues, is one of the most important forms of learning.

Despite the benefits and potential of this kind of learning, I agree that that informal learning can be potentiated if it is worked together with formal learning, and not in an individual and separate way, since formal learning represents the possibility and basic knowledge necessary for the individual to be able to work and apply the knowledge that is acquired through informal learning.

Learning through doing is the best way to explore and develop 21st century skills involving research, categorisation, commenting and applying knowledge on projects at school. Still i do believe they are both time consuming and tend to lack control if not thoroughly scheduled. To sum up, the project surely develop the students' potential to the fullest unengaging them from the classic curriculum.

The examples provided are really interesting. The first one - Recognizing informal learning - could be used to help those students who are not very interested in learning at school but whose interests ouside school already gave them the opportunity to develop competences and skills. The great challenge will be to assess these competences and skills and insert them into a formal context (school assessment and evaluation). The second case - Outdoor Study Project - is a great example of collaboration among teachers and students. I think that a good way towards Future Classroom Scenarios could be the implementation of a Project Based Learning Approach, where projects could be developed in and out schools.

PBL is a good teaching opportunity because today’s students often find school to be boring and meaningless. In PBL, students are active, not passive, and can understand content more deeply, remember what they learn and apply what they know and can do to new situation.

It is almost like going somewhere within a group by riding a bike . Using that means of transport I can change my direction at any point I want, I need. When learning in an informal way I help you learning something , you help me learning something, rather than let’s listen to the teacher. On the other hand, formal learning is like riding on a bus. The bus is going where the bus is going no matter what your individual needs are .

And, implementing collaborative problem activities ; realistic activities , relevant and enganging activities and creating an environment will provide students opportunities to explore and to grow, both intellectually and personally.
The same happens to the process of collaborative teaching and teaching communities ;

teachers engage in frequent, ongoing formal and informal great conversations about pedagogy and teaching practice.

They move away from the traditional idea of teaching, which the majority of students are fed up with and view as something compulsory that has just to be done. They incorporate several 21st century skills in a subtle way and will definitely succeed in capturing learner's attention, increasing their motivation and boosting their self-esteem.

The two future classroom scenarios shown in the videos represent my ideological concept of what teaching should look like. From a neurological as well as from many pedagogical viewpoints this is the kind of learning that students need. Just to name some benefits: It is challenging, fun, exciting, amenable and motivating. To a certain degree, I find these project-based learning scenarios already to be realistic classroom settings. But then again, being a young teacher in my first years, I cannot imagine, how to find the time it takes, to set up such a project and to prepare students with skills for it (not on a permanent base). Although my school offer a similar informal learning project for good students, not as innovative as shown in the project, but still, it's a start.

And if it was a class of 28 students?
- What criteria would teacher have to take to evaluate the work of 28 students if they were all different? And how to combine formal and informal evaluations?
At the second scenario, the pro's are:
- Collaborative work among students
- Better knowledge of the local natural environment
- Learning how to use different instruments (to collect information)
- Teacher has the role of observer and guiding
- Use ICT to complete and present the work
- Share with parents at home th work done
And the con's are:
- Students must be trained in the use of instruments before begin
- Other teachers should be involved, for example Mathematics, for the treatment of the numerical data collected
- How to achieve group goals?
These two scenarios shows that it's very important to recognize informal learning and to do different projects with the students but we, teachers, are attached to curricular programs that must be fulfilled! Teachers face every day mixed ability groups in which there are a great deal of students who simply are not interested in learning by doing at all who interfere with those who would like to work and get the most of these scenarios. I try to work in a somewhat FCS in eTwinning projects and usually find these students disruptive behaviourannoying and preventing the right athmosphere to enjoy through this learning experience. How do we tackle the idea of convincing he schools staff to commit with an iinformal learning to be assessed while we are asked to follow the stated curricula?

There are always teachers who are enthusiasts and try new things but unfortunately there are also many teachers who are unwilling to change. Without collaboration between teachers and mutual support these scenarios are not possible. The other problem is students. Some are simply unmotivated for anything, in some classes there are to many different students that one can't meet everyone's special needs. In my school students are too lazy to do anything by themselves so every day is a struggle.

I think the two videos are interesting and they are right when they show us that there are skills which is important to evaluate when we consider our students, even because our intelligence is multiple and our goals and objectives are different. In a portfolio, it’s important to take into account the interests of the students and the way he/she organizes them. However, it’s not a simple thing to do as you have also a national Curriculum with lots of steps which have to be reached and sometimes you are confused. The question is: What should I assess and take into account when I assess a student who do not follow the “normal” steps? I think of my student and his/her abilities and skills and competences and try to help him/her do the best and reach the goal.

So an e-portfolio would be a helpful tool to recognize informal learning but how and what can we assess? It's not simple to evaluate informal learning when we have a national curriculum with goals that have to be reached.
An activity "on field" is engaging and realistic but it takes a lot of planning and time so, if you want to do a meaningful experience, you can just do a few during a school year. Moreover, it's often a challenge also to find a colleague who wants to work in team.

Ana Fonseca, Prtugal These videos show us two different approaches to classroom learning. They are the opposite of our traditional teaching, where the teacher occupies the place of the person who presents contents and the students passively acquire them. This is how we do, usually, it nowadays and the fact is that many of our students are bored and don’t pay attention. More, they don’t like going to school. However these two videos give us ideas pf how to engage students actively in their learning by getting to what they really like outside school and allowing them to use it to further their school learning. It’s very interesting. As for the second video, it shows an approach that I use whenever I can, which is project based learning. It also gives the students responsibility, autonomy and lets them work collaboratively, so the final result of learning is more rewarding isn’t it? The only cons I can see when using these approaches is the have open-minded colleagues and time.

The one concerning informal learning allows teachers to look at their students from a different perspective: a student may be poor at a given subject but such an online portfolio gives him/her a chance to present his/her talents. Society is changing quickly and nowadays students are very different from the past: they have talents, skills, knowledge that the school should recognize and take in account. They learn through a variety of instruments and tools and are able to manage many different languages. Information can be taken from many sources and students are not always good in discriminating the truth from fakes.
An e-portfolio can be considered, in this view, a mean of communication between the school and what the students consider their "real life"; a place where informal interests, hobbies, abilities and knowledge meet the formality of school teaching and help the student to increase his sense of citizenship and the competences needed to afford the 21st century challenges.

Con's are that, as someone has already noticed, most of us have compulsory curricula to fulfil within the school year (and these tasks take a lot of time to be performed, both for teachers and for students). Moreover they don't allow to cover all the knowledge, skills and competences students are expected to achieve.

Anyway, I have just read that Italian Ministery of Education has decided to reform our students' final exam at secondary school in order to give more importance to the competences they have attained during what we call "alternanza scuola-lavoro", a path where learners can experiment practically studying and working at the same time. It sounds as if Italian school is getting aware of this need in education.

I worked as teacher of German and I was taking part with my pupils in an exchange project, which had as topic "What means water for the area where you live?" Not far from the school there was a small river and my pupils and I decided that it was our "water". We did the project in collaboration with experts of the Museum of Science of Trento. We went several times to the river and pupils learnt "by doing" a lot about it. They were helped to focus attention about plants and animals around the river. They casted the moulds of animals' prints, collected plants' leaves, analized water's samples. At the end they realised as product a power point presentation that they presented during the visit in the partner school. It was a very exciting experience

It was something we had on the Portuguese curricula a few years ago, but actually we are working with a very restricted curricula and don´t have much time to develop different kinds of projects. I´m a Maths teacher e sometimes I feel we are looking at the future with overdue curricular programs. So creativity is our main tool. Both examples have the pro of going into students interest and gives them the freedom of choosing the approach. However if we need to follow a curricula, in both examples there is the risk of not getting the goal.

Activities are student centered and help students to improve their competences and skills. I like the first scenario because informal learning is something I didn't use so far in my teaching and that is the good way to encourage every student to learn and create. I'm afraid we need to change complete education system, philosophy of education and state curricula. Also, as teachers we need more time to prepare and organize these kind of activities.

In my opinion, the second one can benefit students a lot, either by combining it with a more traditional teaching approach of a specific subject or by applying it in a separate project. It may cultivate both creativity and collaboration not only for students but also for teachers. Ts main disadvantage is the necessity of communication and between teachers who teach completely different subjects. As far as the first scenario is concerned, although it may be useful in some special cases, it should not be generalized or replace learning in classrooms, since school is not only a place for learning but also for socializing young people.

Unluckily in Italian upper high school, teachers are obliged to follow some traced routes about objectives which must be achieved by the whole class ( more o less 25 students!) within a stated period. Active learning by investigating and doing develops important skills like creativity and collaboration, but I think that it can only be part of a more traditional approach, where the teacher can't be just an external observer. Unluckily outdoor activities need much time. In our Italian school teachers have to follow stated times and programs and I find hard indeed to organize our big class groups. However, I have already proposed similar activities and will do so again despite the difficulties

Students work in groups, plan their actions, use their hands to create things , search in the Internet, design and combine information, go to excursions in other places and visit museums, cities, institutions, and usually mountain. All these offer to the students another way of learning new things and express themselves in a more free way and more autonomous. The experience I have of these projects is only positive whatever concerns the status of learning for the students. In these progrmas even the students who cannot be competitive in the typical classrooms feel free to act and cooperate and get involved.

Technology IS our present since the invention of the wheel as well as the hammer. Students are so much skilled in all sort of tech devices. So, I wonder whether they will think of us as hopeless teachers, surrounded by all sort of tech devices for what? Classrooms full of beautiful gadgets, yes. Of course. Without any doubts. Students, now, ARE technological. They need a soul. A name. I am still of the mind that we should organise an FCL, yes, but capable to give them what they are looking for. Students are not disillusioned with the lack of techs in our schools. They do not need to learn how to learn: they will learn the way they learn. All their lives long. Everywhere. I hope this beautiful FCLs will give us the nice and beautiful way to give them better things.

They don't require using mass media tools like Facebook or Twitter, yet the student learns to share online something good and positive he or she has envisioned and created. They are good examples of the advantages of digital tools in a controlled and safe environment. Parents will surely appreciate watching their children's work at school and may even learn from them and their projects, therefore encouraging them to participate more in their children's learning process. If they want it so, the school may also choose to share their projects worldwide and thus enhance their prestige and visibility, or even participate in contests or projects in collaboration with other institutions. On the other hand, activities like these are great opportunities for teachers to assess the students' work and skills beyond the mere curriculum.

They set the task and through observation, discussion, guidance and assessment they guided the students to fully participate in their own learning. Teachers I feel would need to be comfortable with this freedom and allow students to direct their learning but there is also a need to challenge them. Teachers collaboration I feel would be necessary to support the teacher!!!

The two scenarios show a philosophy, some methodological principles very similar to the way of working in our classrooms for children.
In this cycle it is very important to start from the interests and motivations of the children, building their learning through close and significant experiences. Therefore, these scenarios are conducive to this. In addition, the professionals with whom we work are very varied in disciplines, favoring the same learning from different perspectives. The role of the educator is a guide, companion, observer, and continuous evaluator of the teaching and learning process.
What may differ most between these scenarios and those we are currently working on are material resources. It is necessary to believe in the abilities of these tools in the integral development of our children and to invest in them. We must also reflect on what kind of technological tools are appropriate to the real possibilities of ours students.

First of all they focus on real experiences: this means that they encourage new teaching approaches: innovative, digital, multidisciplinary, collaborative, motivating. In addition, they consider the students' interests and skills and promote them. This is really important to fight the school drop-out. Too often schools focus on what students can do according specific and structured topics; without considering the student's needs and skills education is doomed to fail. The videos also suggest interesting and innovative assessment practices.

Both scenarios are very interesting. The first concerns the PBL pedagogical technique "revolutionary", characterized by strong interactive and based on the active involvement of learners. In fact, students learn "on the field." Learning takes place not listening, but making, seeking their own solutions to the "puzzle" proposed. The PBL exercises thus allow a connection between the theoretical and cognitive learning (knowing that) and the technical-operational (knowing how), greatly enriching the effectiveness of the lesson. The example in the video is very effective but the main problem of this method, in my opinion is that it can not be applied to all subjects. Even the second scenario offers reflection ideas. In fact, create a multidisciplinary path it allows students to reflect on what they learn in school and out-door activities create collaborative and engaging learning environments. With these assets are valued both the formal and informal learningWith these assets are valued both the formal and informal learning. In this way students acquire the skills for the 21st century.

Also students have chance to share their works so the activity gets more meaningful for their lives and they may create memories to save the information for a long time. In the second video, I see a well-planned lesson scenerio which includes all the steps in Bloom taxonomy (critical thinking skills)and 21st century skills. It is a crosscurricular and inquiry-based lesson plan, students are active learners and try to find solutions to a problem by collecting true data, testing data in real environment -learning by doing( real life situations), analysing the data and create a presentation in collaboration(group works) using technological tools and, dissemination of the piece of information engaging all the stakeholders(via internet tools). In the assessment part, the observation and constructive feedback of teachers gain importance in order to improve the accuracy of the knowledge.

I like both approaches. The frist one especially, as it lets children pursue their own interests and then possibly are able to get a grade for it (which will probably be high, as theri motivation was high to start with, which should overall just increase the student's desire to particiapte in similar activities more). The only problem is that sometimes, some skills we are trying to teach just do not lend themselves to this kind of learning in the traditional classroom, so teachers have to keep an open mind and be flexible about what is acceptable for providing evidence of learning in certain areas. The second approach is also good, but apart from video editing, which I'm sure children would like, this kind of project is something I believe can be attempted without technology - by letting children present the results through a poster, or short presentation. Still, it is a good actity, and interdisciplinary projects are something all teachers should aspire to.

As it has been said the two videos show two different pedagogical approaches: the first one based on the student's interests and the second one on the teachers inniciative to create interest in the students. The common point is that both strategies aim that the students work by themselves and be motivated and "have fun". Learning shouldn't be an obligation, students should like learning, and that is something that not always happens, unfortunately.

Both scenarios have positive effects. The first one gives a chance to a student who isn't necessarily interested in or good at some subject. Incorporating his hobby into the learning process may have numerous effects: he may feel more confident, other students and teachers may admire his work outside school and therefore change their attitude towards this student. I had a similar idea last year when I organised an event in which students with outstanding outside school achievements made presentations in front of all the other students. It was a memorable event and I intend to organise it again, it proves that sometimes students have more to say than we expect them to. The second option is also interesting as it's based on collaboration, which is extremely important in the 21st century education.

I think a lot of work should be put upfront before starting engaging students into the group activity learning or outdoor learning. Normally, students get used to the traditional classroom setting and they have to leave their comfort zone and feel that they learn or acquire knowledge, skills for themselves to apply them in the future. So, tapping on autonomous learning skills, teaching how to cooperate and collaborate with the peers, sharing, negotiating, using digital resources to process the material, making inquiries are all great examples of introducing the 21st century competencies into the classroom. I guess these kind of activities cannot be implemented on a regular basis

The teacher is a guide a facilitator of students' learning; the students have a dinamic role in the classroom because they gain a better understanding through the activite exploration of real world challenges and problems; Students love working in a collaborative learning environment where through the technology fulfill their works.

Celia B., Portugal Very interesting and innovative but the question is does it work? I have very disruptive students and they do not expect anything from school and the school does not trust them. They are very misbehaved because their families are spilt apart as weel: single mothers, orphans living with aunts, granddaughters living with grandmothers, etc.But since one of my faults is being optimistic here are the pros: more engaged and motivated students; about the cons: how do we evaluate learning objectives

I just want to note that is not always easy to have a place where this kind of activities to take place. This includes transport and all kind of documents for geting out with the children during the school programe. This situation appears, maybe is easier for others. About informal learning: I do think this is good for kids, they are learning by doing somethink they like but it seams to me that if somebody knows to build a platform that person doesn't need the lesson... And if somebody is doing only what he/she likes that person will have a lack of skills in some areas. I think people should know a little bit of everything and lot of he/she likes. Maybe I am wrong... I wonder when is doing the teacher that extra job observing and evaluating a child or two who are learning informal? Even now, sometimes I feel I am a teacher 24 hours in a day...maybe I should plan better my time!

The design and implementation ITEC requires a change of the traditional way of thinking about teaching and questions the regulator "model teacher" in favor of a mode centered on the design and organization of activities, the conduct of creative teaching situations and support to the work of the boys. It would be appropriate to create a group of teachers willing to work together to share ideas and find solutions to common problems. To change the time of school activities design mode by reversing the traditional approach: starting from the methodology to arrive later to content. To develop an active teaching method that overcomes the concept of lectures putting students at the heart of the learning process. To adopt a flexible and agile approach shared at European level. To stimulate the creativity of teachers and students through activities and tools that enhance new ideas and initiative. In informal learning we learn a lot and are usually focused on the hobbies and preferences of the person (skills, tools ..) On the other hand we have learning based on projects, research, critical and collaborative learning in the environment, outdoor learning with all Potential it has.

I think that the both scenarios are relevant for learning. The student can do a project about his hobby. The outcome is that he learn how to collect information, how to document it , structure it and how to present it. In the second scenario, the conditions are created for students to achieve a greater understanding of nature by actually studying it closely and not through books. I see only advantages to collaborate across subjects. It creates synergies and students get a larger context that they can practice their skills in.
