"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), created under a different name in 1906, was originally tasked with monitoring drug products for inadequate labeling or fraudulent claims of health benefits. In 1937, drug company S. E. Massengill mistakenly used a toxic solvent in one of its medications, which resulted in more than one hundred deaths. To prevent such a tragedy from occurring again, the FDA became responsible for ensuring the safety of medications before they could be made available to consumers. In 1951, the FDA also became responsible for classifying drugs as “over the counter” (safe for consumers to buy and use without medical supervision) or “prescription-only” (issued only with a doctor’s permission). "
Gale
2017
