We will go through some of the elements in the 5 E Lesson Design Process during this session to arrive at our own personal explanations and responses to the questions. Please do not respond to them yet. For now, they are purely food for thought. I would like for everyone that participates in this session not to feel that they need to have any perfectly formulated responses. What I love about the inquiry process, is that it is a journey towards understanding. By examining the information presented, it will be interesting to see where your understanding takes you. I am also hoping that you will consider how you can iterate and ideate on the information and activities shared to make it relevant to the spaces in which each of you hold. Thus, the questions are for you to think about and consider. If you already have responses, great, please record them in a journal. (With my own students, we keep track of our thinking and where it goes in our interactive notebooks. These are great spaces for us to track our personal journeys and reflect upon them. And remember, feel free to journal in ways that make the most sense to you--maps, models, illustrations, writings... I challenge you to try a method of recording your ideas that you may have not tried before.) Mahalo for honoring, and allowing all participants the opportunity to consider where they are at individually at this point in time. Finally, we will also be looking at the science phenomena behind the proactive measures we have all been asked to take to keep our families and communities safe.

American Samoa has a history of avoiding pandemics through coordinated chiefly and US governmental action starting from the 1918 Swine flu pandemic where a total quarantine led to 0 cases and deaths. Last year, in Samoa the rate of vaccination against measles was 31% due anti-vax sentiment. Children died from respiratory problems, field hospitals were set up and without realizing it, health personnel were prepared for the upcoming COVID-19, (See Retro Report American Samoa Dodfed a Pandemic and article below.) American Samoa had a higher rate of vaccination but still locked down for measles as they did for COVID-19. So far, 0 cases in American Samoa.

This video connects the 1918 Swine flu pandemic to COVID-19. It contrasts the 25% death rate in Western Samoa, controlled by NZ and American Samoa, where no one died due to strict quarantine by Gov. Poyer. American Samoa is the only US state or territory with 0 COVID-19 cases. Compare this to the history of Western Samoa, now Samoa, an independent state that after a century, decided to realign itself with NZ with time change and driving British style with American built cars. Pretty tricky!
