Mark Twain's real name was Samuel Clemes. he was born in Florida, a town in Missouri, USA, in 1835 and he then lived in Hannibal, Missouri. When he was twelve, his father died, and he went out to work. He began to write for his brother's newspaper and later he wrote for newspapers in Nevada and California. From 1857 to 1861, he was a river-pilot, guiding river boats on the great Mississippi river. The name 'Mark Twain' came from his life on the Mississippi. The river-pilots called out words like these to the captain of the boat, and 'Mark Twain' meant that there were two fathoms of water under the boat.
He started to write books of stories in 1867 and became famous for making people laugh. The Andventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are his two most famous books. Many of the people and places in these stories are from the years when Mark Twain was a boy in Hannibal.
Mark Twain wrote many books. Some of them were important. some not so important, and he travelled to many Esglish-speaking countries, talking about his work. Sadly, he had money problems, and his wife and two of his three daughters died before him, so his life was difficult and unhappy when he was older. He died in 1910.

Sir Arthut Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied madicine and worked as a doctor for eight years. Because he wanted to earn more money, he started writing, and soon people were reading his stories in weekly magazines.
In the opening pages of his first novel, A Stufy in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes appeared for the first time - a strange, coldly intelligent detective, who smokes a pipe, plays the violin, and lives at 221B Baker Street in London. He can find the answer to almost any problem, and often explains how easy it is to his slow-thinking friend, Dr Watson. Readers began to show great interest in Holmes when The Sign of Four was published in 1890, and short stories about him, in the Strand magazine, were very popular.
Conan Doyle himself preferred writing novels about history, like The White Company, and he soon became bored with the Sherlock Holmes character. So, in The Final Problem he 'killed' him, when Holmes and his famous enemy, Moriarty, fell to their deaths in the Reichenbach falls.
But because people wanted more stories about Holmes, Conan Doyle had to bring him back to life, in The Hounf of the Baskervilles, and many more stories.
