On April 6th, 1994 a plane was shot down leaving no survivors. It is not determined whether Hutu extremists or the RPF did it but it marked the beginning of the Rwandan Genocide. During the one-hundred days following April 6th, 800,000 Tutsi and Hutu were killed. Hundreds-of-thousands of people became refugees.

Habyarimana accused Tutsi residents of being RPF accomplices and arrested hundreds of them. Between 1990 and 1993, government officials directed massacres of the Tutsi, killing hundreds. A ceasefire in these hostilities led to negotiations between the government and the RPF in 1992. " This means that the Rwandan Patriotic Force was fighting the Hutu extremists.

Although they were outnumbered, members of the RPF benefited greatly from their superior training, discipline, and leadership. They captured more and more territory until, in July 1994 they occupied Kigali." This ended the Rwandan Genocide where Hutu extremists massacred 800,000 Tutsi and Hutu people.

The Belgians continued the governing system of Tutsi control, further removing power from the Hutus and giving privilege to the Tutsi minority in all areas." Because of this, the Hutu people wanted more power and began the genocide to get it.
