They also were debating on which gender was smarter. Mr. Bill could have seized the opportunity and gave the class a quick lesson on sexism instead of condoning that behavior.

Mr. Bill and other teachers can easily make a list of ways to split the class and then the students can choose from there. Ensuring all of these ways will be free of exposing kids to sexism or stereotypes of course.

There should not be an idea of a gender being more intelligent than the other and kids. Or thinking that everyone identifies by one thing or the other strictly. All teachers can start enforcing this in their classrooms by making lists of what children can choose from. This also can be applied within the classroom. The teacher can communicate with their students for all of this to be avoided. Everything can be discussed with the students so they don't carelessly make these remarks.
Making these lists and giving them options for them not to find themselves in the wrong.
