Not too long ago, one of my 10-year old students sat at her desk, struggling to get a grasp on what the content of a writing task meant to her. She had written two superficial drafts, but I could see she wasn't satisfied. I sat next to her and the two of us proceeded to have a dialogue about what she wanted to do when she grew up: not just what she wanted to BE but what she wanted to MAKE HAPPEN in the world more than anything, in the grand scheme of things. It was as though a door unlocked. The poem that she wrote following that discussion was so simple, and yet so profound and so powerful that I had to walk out of the room to compose myself. That was a moment of significance for me. In that moment, I was not only a teacher proud of what her student had achieved, but also a writer standing in admiration of another's work.

We met in a sea of thoughts, picking up which idea to choose. Then, a gush of words blowing towards us and flew us to a land of blank paper. As the wind subsided, the words dropped on the ground, left us a mess to clean up. Writing suggested that we could make a beautiful piece of land out from these words. We chose, we arranged , we eliminated the words, trying to find the best one. With countless sleepless nights, we finally completed it. The land started to flourish and luminated in bright colors. Writing released my hand and slowly floated off to the sky. I watched him gone further and further away from me. Soon after, I was alone again.

My writing style is all about jotting down whatever’s swirling in my head about a particular idea. I let those thoughts control my typing, not stopping to worry about grammar, punctuation or even style. My only focus is getting it all down on paper and then coming back to it, and trying to make sense of it. That first draft is usually when my creativity is at its most genuine form. Once the piece starts taking shape, it’s usually the result of hours of overthinking and rewriting. There’s something incredibly powerful about that first draft. I’d go so far as to say, t’s my favorite stage of the writing process.

Words are the bridge between your mind and another's, a way to share the world in your head. Yet for each person who reads the same words they'll view it differently. Writing allows your feelings to pour out and escape from your fingertips in the way that your lips couldn't manage, the words that got choked in your throat, or never left the tip of your tongue. For me, writing was the therapist I never wanted to visit, the visual representation of the turmoil in my mind, and the culmination of those 3am thoughts. Talking about things didn't work for me but writing; that always worked. Every word can have meaning. Alternatively one can have so much to say and yet so little substance, but that's what editing is for, no?

However, when I was around 12, we moved into a neighborhood that comprised people of different ethnicities and, as such, the general conversation was in English. Upon becoming confident and fluent in spoken English, I switched to English for my secondary education …..thereby acquiring writing skills……although my formal English learning as a subject was limited to the little I received in primary school.

- Taking, economics, business studies, logic for my secondary education I read avidly in English ……….particularly for logic, which I came to like ……………..and I read Russell a lot ……..

- I became avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction ……………..
