Although people are filled with hope with the American Dream, they become gloomy because they all realize that they can't be a part of the American Dream, and that it is hard to achieve. They usually won't make enough money to do the American Dream. He is black, and during this time in history, there was still racism and prejudice, so there wasn't an equal opportunity for African Americans.
