No computers, only a few info sheets. It allows them to talk and get to know each other. A poem, an essay, a personal narrative, a 'this I believe', a stance on an issue. Have them choose lyricless music to put in the background. Post the mp3s online and allow students to listen to their classmates' work. Amazing how taking a work of writing off of the page and creating something different out of it creates a different sense of ownership. I then give them back at semester to see if the students have reached their goals.
