A voice from the dark called out,

‘The poets must give us

imagination of peace, to oust the intense, familiar

imagination of disaster. Peace, not only

the absence of war.’

But peace, like a poem,

is not there ahead of itself,

can’t be imagined before it is made,

can’t be known except

in the words of its making,

grammar of justice,

syntax of mutual aid.

A feeling towards it,

dimly sensing a rhythm, is all we have

until we begin to utter its metaphors,

learning them as we speak.

A line of peace might appear

if we restructured the sentence our lives are making,

revoked its reaffirmation of profit and power,

questioned our needs, allowed

long pauses . . .

A cadence of peace might balance its weight

on that different fulcrum; peace, a presence,

an energy field more intense than war,

might pulse then,

stanza by stanza into the world,

each act of living

one of its words, each word

a vibration of light—facets

of the forming crystal.

Our own shadows disappear as the feet of thousands
by the tens of thousands pound the fallow land
into new dust that
rising like a marvelous pollen will be
fertile
even as the first woman whispering
imagination to the trees around her made
for righteous fruit
from such deliberate defense of life
as no other still
will claim inferior to any other safety
in the world

The whispers too they
intimate to the inmost ear of every spirit
now aroused they
carousing in ferocious affirmation
of all peaceable and loving amplitude
sound a certainly unbounded heat
from a baptismal smoke where yes
there will be fire

And the babies cease alarm as mothers
raising arms
and heart high as the stars so far unseen
nevertheless hurl into the universe
a moving force
irreversible as light years
traveling to the open
eye

And who will join this standing up
and the ones who stood without sweet company
will sing and sing
back into the mountains and
if necessary
even under the sea

we are the ones we have been waiting for

In Stanley Cooper's poem "The War To End All Wars," the poet through SMILE method criticizes the deceptive attractions of war and reflects his fears on its disastrous impact. The Syntax succinctly gets across the irony of the phrase 'the war to end all wars', with the naive belief of those who were now deceased and unaware of the deception being well and truly exposed. The metaphor of war being "peddled with promised glory" underlines the manipulative tactics deployed to sell wars, which is in harsh contrast to the cruel reality of death in force of patriotism. Strong Imagery was made by the poet, depicting bloody effects of war and refusal to grant to old age the right to one who lain down his life. Cooper uses Language is felt, stressing the need for future generations to discern a peaceful path for their survival. The poem is, thus, laden with emotion, expresses the poet's deep feeling for the fate of the world and calls all to measure up to a commitment to peace as a way of rejecting the fateful destruction of war.

In Denise Levertov poem "Making Peace," it is apparent that the approach SMILE is in the structure of it. Syntax of the poem is on purpose, underlines that call from dark voice urgency to have for the entire imagination movement from disaster to peace. It is kind of a living and creative state, quite greatly to be understood in the metaphor of peace with a poem. The poet makes use of the Imagery when describing peace as rhythm and a language where one has to learn and speak. Levertov's use of Language is truly impactful, introducing to her words the grammar of justice and its syntax. mutual aid itself, essential components of peace. Emotion is weaved within the fabric of the poem, encouraging a rethinking of societal values and questioning of who's writing the current narrative. All in all, though, "Making Peace" uses the SMILE elements to argue for the need of a transforming and an active peace paradigm asserting that it is dynamic and as such there should be an ongoing investment as well as conscious building of it.

Both the Syntax and Metaphor employed by June Jordan in her poem, "A Poem for South African Women" clearly show use of the SMILE method. Its short and effective lines build rhythmic momentum giving a carefully built syntax that mirrors the collective power and strength described in consecutive verses. Metaphorically, shadows vanish and thousands of foot pounds the fallow soil depict the collective unleashing of power for transformative liberation. The vivid Imagery using splendid pollen together with whispers to the trees depicts renewal as well as rebirth. Jordan's use of Language is powerful as she speaks of a "moving force irreversible as light years," and in essence, notes that the nature of the change being invoked cannot be stopped. The Emotion in the poem is palpable, and the ferocious affirmation and resounding call for unity bare a sense of immediacy. All in all, the poem skilfully uses the SMILEs to make a strong message of solidarity, resistance and transforming potentialities of unified and collective action.
