The supernatural is not ‘supernatural’ in the story of Macbeth. In fact, it is natural. They live their every day lives with the beliefs of witches, prophecies, other superstitious things and the belief that there are some unknown entities that are controlling what is occurring on a daily basis.

First encounter of the supernatural

The first ‘supernatural’ concept we perceive are the Three Witches, who are also known as the ‘weird sisters’. Here, we see that there is something ‘fishy’ about them. They seem to have evil intent and look as if they are going to manipulate the unaware Macbeth and Banquo. They start predicting the future, which is a part of the supernatural. At first, the two protagonists don't seem to be bought by the prophecies. Later on however, the prophecies started to become correct. This gave the idea that the possibility of becoming king was very probable to Macbeth.

The floating dagger

During the attempt to murder the King in order to inherit the throne, Macbeth sees what he identifies as a ‘floating dagger’ which would then lead him to the King’s room. What he really saw however, was simply his imagination. The dagger gave him a little push to advance with the plan of murder. This gives the audience the impression that whatever the ‘supernatural’ is, it is evil.

The Witches- The givers of the prophecies, the spanner in the works, the thorn in the side of the plot. In giving Macbeth and Banquo their respective prophecies, they cause the pair to become consumed by these prophecies, due to the witches' supernatural abilities.

Banquo- Following his unfortunate death, Banquo returns in the form of an apparition. This is supernatural, as he is not really there, although Macbeth is clearly able to see him, no other individual present at the Banquet is able to see as Macbeth does.

Macbeth- Macbeth himself does not figuratively represent the supernatural, although the floating dagger which appears before him does. This dagger guides him through his clouded judgement and his misty thoughts. The dagger ultimately walks the very thing line which borders right and wrong, Much to his disbelief, Macbeth ventures into the vast unknown known as regret, due to the supernatural.

Ghost of Banquo

During the appearance of the ghost, we get to see how much Macbeth has changed. He has gone mad, most likely with the guilt of killing the king and the supernatural things that are happening around him. He reacts with distraught and worries the guests. The visitors seem to not be able so see the ghost, which confirms that it is indeed a ghost. Banquo represents the incorrect deeds Macbeth has committed, while it also represents his best friend. If he had not gone to extreme measures to get to the throne, and let fate do its thing, none of these misshapen things would have occurred.

Second Set of Prophecies

Macbeth receives a second set of prophecies from the witches. The first prophecy warns him to be cautious of Macduff, the Thane of Fife. The second informs him the he cannot be killed of someone woman born. This gives him confidence that he will not be killed. The third and last prophecy is that, he will not be in danger until the woods come to the hill, which seems impossible. The now very confident Macbeth believes he will reign much much longer. Although, in the end, he was killed by the hands of Macduff. His army used the branches of the woods to camouflage the assault. The misinterpret of the prophecies lead to the death of Macbeth.

Conclusion

The use of supernatural elements in the play make up the majority of the plot. It enables the story to continue and gives rise to action and many other interesting scenes. Every single major event that occurs, is due to the supernatural. The very plot itself is made possible by the first set of prophecies. It set off the story. Killing the king, the appearance of Banquo and Macbeth’s death were all because of the supernatural.

Without the theme of supernatural, the plot would almost be completely different as Macbeth would have not be persuaded to kill the king, which was the major point of the story.
