Sam Hunt deliberately portrays his mothers sacrifices throughout the opening stanza of the poem Stabat Mater in an attempt to camouflage her life's regret, pain and suffering. This is demonstrated when the readers infer that his mother has been forced to marry a man who is older by two generations. This is conveyed to the reader when Sam Hunt's mother refers to her own husband as "Mr.Hunt". This indicates that Mr.Hunt was the dominant person in the family and his orders to be followed. This makes the reader feel sympathetic towards Sam Hunt's childhood as the had to witness his own mother embarrassed from her own husband. However, contrast is used to show how over the time the dominant father figure looses his mind as the mother "guides him around"

One key theme that Hunt presents in the poem 'Stabat Mater' is the passing of time through the transition of his parents' relationship. In the first stanza of the poem, Hunt mentions that his "mother called [his] father 'Mr Hunt' For the first few years of married life" which shows the early stages of his parents' relationship when they had just married. His father's formal title highlights the age gap between the mother and the father as she feels it is not acceptable for her to refer to an elderly by a slang name. The alliteration used in the second line portrays the formal and uncomfortable. The constant sound of 'f' further suggests that she was forced into this relationship, most probably due to an arrangement. Additionally, in stanza three of the poem, the mother is described "Now in a different way, still like a girl, She calls my father every other sort of name;" which highlights her young age, especially compared to Hunt's father who is significantly older than her. The word 'different' portrays the change in the relationship.

Sam Hunt's 'Stabat Mater' maintains the key idea of time and aging by portraying it through the poets father. The poet's mother and father are set in an arranged marriage where there is a thirty year age gap as time passes, the mother guides her husband as he 'roams in old age'. This suggest that the father is inevitably fading, physically and mentally, his wife takes care of him as she is still intact. The readers feel a sense of regret because they feel as though the mother's life has been wasted by an arranged marriage with an older man. His decaying could suggest the mothers freedom from the unhappy marriage

Hunt highlights the passing of time in the poem by using the transition of stanzas. Throughout the poem, every stanza projects a segment of his parents' relationship. The first stanza describes how distant and formal their relationship is whereas in the final stanza, the mother is superior to father "as he roams old age" and loses his power. He is displayed as aimless as the word "roams" emphasises him purposelessly wandering. This also signifies the father's conversion from being highly respected and named as "Mr Hunt" by his wife, to almost being absouletly useless without her aid and guidance. This again links to the power of time and the inevitability of death.
