What is Imagism?

Imagism is a poetic movement which involves creating images that are viewed as expressions (Verbless). The main goal of a work of imagism is to create an image with a clear meaning. Imagism works often paint extremely vivid images. The pieces I have created and borrowed use imagism to get off clear, concise points. I have created two poems and taken a photos, as well as finding a famous American poem.
My first poem, "Prices", provides a take on what we truly value in modern society. The poem I selected, "In the Desert", gives a deep look into humanity and how much we really love ourselves. I made my second original poem, "The Battle is Not Won", with the message that power is an illusion filled with misery. In my image, I sought to remind my audience of how important it is to look to the past, remember it, and learn from it.

My main goal in this piece was to create a jarring image that was up to multiple interpretations. I want the reader to question how much things are valued in modern society. One decision I made about the poem was to add occasional breaks in the poem that make the reader think about what just happened. Another decision I made was to write this poem with a lot of cacophony, to make the reader question the prices they put on things. I did this by showcasing the pop of a gun, and describing a dead man's hand.

I chose this piece because it creates a beautiful image of a beast eating his bitter heart. This poem represents self love, and how no matter how monstrous humans may be, we must always love ourselves. Crane uses lots of diction to make the image of the creature come alive. The way he describes the creature make it seem like it could pop out any moment. He also uses connotation very well. When the creature uses the term bitter, we immediately associate bitterness with resentment. This is meaningful because it is his heart that he is so resentful towards.
Another tool he uses is the poem structure and taking advantage of the spacing. When he pauses after talking about the bitter heart, the reader has no guess as to what comes next. The pause makes us think about our own hearts and our humanity in general.

My main goal in this piece was to show how corruptive and scary power can really be. I did this by creating an image of a shiny crown that disappears into misery. Another way I did this was making the crown isolated, because power makes one isolate themselves from others. I used irony when I described the crown as cheap and worthless to express the truth behind that statement. I used connotation when talking about the crown. Most people see a crown as a symbol of power and success, but all it truly is is a hat on a king's head.

My goal in taking this picture was to remind people that it is important to look back on your life and relive the amazing experiences you've had. The trail of chopped water shows the path that has been taken, and it almost looks as though you are moving towards the chopped water. This means that reliving the past can be as exciting as experiencing new things. The mountains show how beautiful past experiences are, although they are darkened by the clouds, which symbolize the fogginess that comes over memories. The image is simple yet gets its point across very clearly.
