When evaluating your own teamwork skills, consider your ability to actively listen, communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, contribute positively to problem-solving, adapt to changing situations, support team members, manage conflict constructively, and demonstrate accountability, all while maintaining a positive attitude and respect for diverse perspectives. 

Key areas to self-assess:

  Utilize feedback provided during performance reviews to identify areas for improvement related to teamwork. 

Remember that effective teamwork is a continuous process that requires self-awareness, active engagement, and a commitment to supporting your team's success. 

In a group work assignment, we divided sections according to people’s strengths. When we tried to piece the assignment together it was written in different styles and therefore we had to spend time rewriting it.

Feelings:

I thought our plan would work and felt good about it. When we had to rewrite it, I felt frustrated.

Evaluation:

The process of dividing sections went well. However, it didn’t work not having foreseen/planned rewriting the sections for coherence and writing styles.

Analysis:

Dividing work according to individual strengths is useful. Belbin’s team roles (2010) would suggest something similar. I have done it before and it seems to work well.

The reason piecing work together didn’t work was we had no plan for what it needed to look like. We were so focused on finishing quickly that no one would raise a concern. The last part can be explained by ‘groupthink’ (e.g. Jarvis, 1991), where members of a group make a suboptimal decision because individuals are afraid of challenging the consensus.

Conclusion:

I learned that using people’s strengths is efficient. Moreover, planning how we want the work to look, before we go off on our own is helpful. Lastly, I will remember the dangers of groupthink, and what the theory suggests to look out for.

Action plan:

I will use Belbin’s team roles to divide group work in the future. Moreover, I will suggest writing one section together before we do our own work, so we can mirror that in our own writing. Finally, I will speak my mind when I have concerns, by remembering it can benefit the outcome.

The Five Stages:

1. 1. Forming:

   In this initial stage, team members are getting to know each other, establishing boundaries, and exploring the team's goals. There is often a high level of uncertainty and dependence on the leader. Members may be focused on their individual roles and how they fit into the team. 

2. 2. Storming:

   As the team progresses, differences in opinions, personalities, and approaches may surface, leading to conflict and disagreement. This is a natural stage where the team works through conflicts and establishes its norms. 

3. 3. Norming:

   The team starts to develop a shared understanding of its goals, roles, and expectations. Members begin to trust each other and work more collaboratively. Group cohesion increases, and norms are established. 

4. 4. Performing:

   The team is now working effectively, with members collaborating efficiently and achieving their goals. There is a high degree of interdependence and shared leadership. 

5. 5. Adjourning:

   This final stage, also known as Deforming or Mourning, marks the end of the team's project or task. The team disbands, and members may experience a sense of loss or reflection.

• Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle:

  This model focuses on the learning process itself, involving concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. 

• Rolfe et al.'s model:

  This model emphasizes the importance of critical reflection and encourages practitioners to analyze their experiences, feelings, and actions to develop practice. 

• SURETY model:

  This model focuses on nonverbal communication, including body language, with aspects building on the SOLER model.

• Realistic and attainable: Set goals that are challenging but not impossible to achieve.
