For my first attempt at designing my album front cover, I used the software photoshop which allowed me to create a grainy and ink-bleed textual effect. However, I wasn't happy with the final design because the album title only took up a third of the cover, leaving a lot of negative space. I felt like this made the cover less eye-catching, which is important to persuade consumers to pick up the digipak off store shelves. Therefore, I decided to try designing my front cover again.

This time, I used both Illustrator and Photoshop to design my front cover. Illustrator allowed me to stretch my text so that it can fill up the whole cover. Using Photoshop, I then edited the text using the displacement tool to create a warped, grainy effect which I liked from the first design attempt.

I am quite happy with the final design of my album cover. I think my design both subverts and conforms to conventions of digipaks. This is because whilst my digipak does not feature my artist's face, which most digipak designs do, doing this allowed me to fill up most of the cover with my album title (which conforms to the conventions of designing a digipaks as most digipaks feature their album title in large, bold, vibrant typography).

I used the brush tool on photoshop to create the blue, circular brush strokes for the background. By keeping the shade of blue the same as the front cover, this allows there to be consistency throughout my digipak design. I took inspiration from Kanye's Graduation digipak back cover where his song list was indented each line, possibly to signify the middle song being the most important. Hence, I chose the song for my music video to be the middle track. Since digipak codes and conventions requires a barcode and copyright information to be included, I included this on the bottom of the layout so that it would not distract audience's attention from the track list.

Through researching popular digipaks, I learnt that this panel is most commonly used as a sleeve to hold a booklet for the album which contains promotional information and more. Instead of doing this, I instead opted for a simple design that was similar to the back cover with the circular brush stroke, with my artist's fictitious promotional website for the album placed in the middle. This is because this website would allow consumers to get all the information they may need, such as tour dates, merch, album inspo, and more.

I used photoshop to create this complex background with a gradient circle overlayed a gradient background. Once again, I kept the colour scheme the same in order to maintain cohesiveness throughout the digipak design. Whilst my research showed that most digipak designs use these panels to include a personal message from the artist, or a brief description of the artist and their background, I chose instead to include the song lyrics of the chorus of my chosen song "Only One". This is to encourage audiences to listen to the song, by implying that it is the track that holds the most significance to my artist in the album.

It is very common for digipaks to reuse the same design on the album cover for the disk as well. Hence, I chose to do the same. I am overall very happy with the final design. I think the shade of blue I used for the text makes the album title stand out, and the grainy effect creates a grunge look which is somewhat appropriate for the solemn and sentimental tone of the album.
