Dr. Seuss

This is a book by Dr. Seuss that has to do with the ABCs. Throughout this book, they go through every single letter, and use words that start with that letter. For example, for Y they said "A yawning yellow yak. Young Yolanda is yelling on its back."

The lesson that the students could take from this book is that in simplest terms this book is going in chronological order with the letters and repeating their short sounds. I would say the letter and sound and ask them to echo it back to me.

By Maurice Pledger

The story is about a baby Dolphin exploring the sea to find his mother and meets different animals along the way. The book then describes the animals, the baby dolphin discovers.

This book is a touch-and-feel book, it is a great multi-model book. In the Book, students learn about different animals that live in the ocean. Then they can touch the animals, feeling their different skins. In the book as well, they have some of the words in bold so it is easier to follow the story.

Shel Silverstein

"Where the Sidewalk Ends" is a fan favorite when it comes to poetry. There are over 100 poems in this book along with drawings to match. These poems are full of curiosity and are so different in an amazing way.

I love how this book has many interesting scenarios and situations I could never imagine. All of these poems and drawings have a recognizable style. So when it comes to students showing that their voice can have a style that can stay consistent throughout multiple written stories.

By Mary Pope Osborne

This is a chapter book, that is my favorite series of all time. I felt like everyone could read them, it is a about a brother and sister that have a magic tree house that can take them to anytime in the past. In the first one, Jack wished he could see dinosaurs so they end up traveling to prehistoric time. Jack and Annie end up getting into some pretty dangerous situations and are trying to get back home. This is the baseline for most of the chapter books, just the places and times are different.

I would use this in a lesson by asking students to write about when and where, they would want to travel if they had a magic tree house. They would use three supporting facts to support their claim.

So this book would help with phonemic awareness, it would help students to hear identify sounds that are the same. I would teach this if students were having trouble with sounds of Tier one words. There is also a movie of this book, so I would first show them the movie to improve comprehension, then read to them, and then have them read to me.
