Dark Romantics believe that human beings are destined to be bad despite their attempts to be good. Some may say that this is true, however some may believe that Dark Romantics are too pesamistic. Using the short story on "Dr. Heiddegger's Experiment", "Demons" by Imagine Dragon, "The Two Wolves", and the video on the Philosophy of Human Nature, write an essay in which you prove, qualify or disprove the statement that humans are innately evil.

"Dr. Heiddegger's Experiment" reflects the good and evil natures of humans. Dr. Heidegger himself values things based on their importance and meaning rather than their appearance, like the rose. However, his guest do not share these values. This excerpt shows their transformation after drinking of the fountain of youth. Despite Heiddeger's warning, the guests go back to their old habits.

“The fair widow knew, of old, that Colonel Killigrew's compliments were not always measured by sober truth; so she started up and ran to the mirror, still dreading that the ugly visage of an old woman would meet her gaze. Meanwhile, the three gentlemen behaved in such a manner as proved that the water of the Fountain of Youth possessed some intoxicating qualities; unless, indeed, their exhilaration of spirits were merely a lightsome dizziness caused by the sudden removal of the weight of years. Mr. Gascoigne's mind seemed to run on political topics, but whether relating to the past, present, or future could not easily be determined, since the same ideas and phrases have been in vogue these fifty years. Now he rattled forth full-throated sentences about patriotism, national glory, and the people's right; now he muttered some perilous stuff or other, in a sly and doubtful whisper, so cautiously that even his own conscience could scarcely catch the secret; and now, again, he spoke in measured accents, and a deeply deferential tone, as if a royal ear were listening to his well-turned periods. Colonel Killigrew all this time had been trolling forth a jolly bottle song, and ringing his glass in symphony with the chorus, while his eyes wandered toward the buxom figure of the Widow Wycherly. On the other side of the table, Mr. Medbourne was involved in a calculation of dollars and cents, with which was strangely intermingled a project for supplying the East Indies with ice, by harnessing a team of whales to the polar icebergs.”

In this story, the Grandfather talks about how there are two different sides in him represented by wolves; the good wolf and the bad wolf. He goes on to explain that both wolves fight to win him over, and

A young boy came to his Grandfather, filled with anger at another boy who had done him an injustice.
The old Grandfather said to his grandson, "Let me tell you a story. I too, at times, have felt a great hate for those that have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do. But hate wears you down, and hate does not hurt your enemy. Hate is like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings many times."
"It is as if there are two wolves inside me; one wolf is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him and does not take offence when no offence was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way. But the other wolf, is full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a fit of temper."
"He fights everyone, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, because his anger will change nothing. Sometimes it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, because both of the wolves try to dominate my spirit."
The boy looked intently into his Grandfather's eyes and asked, "Which wolf will win, Grandfather?"
The Grandfather smiled and said, "The one I feed."

The singer talks about how the world is very dark and how he wants to protect the person he loves from being changed by the "demons", other people. The demons will try to take the loved one and make him/her as dark and depressed as they are. The song could reflect the good in the person the narrator wants to protect or the bad that the narrator feels consumed by.
