Midwives are now able to complete ultrasounds and immediately communicate and transmit images directly to a radiologist. This is extremely impactful by allowing rural nurse midwives to be able to identify high-risk patients. Antenatal ultrasound has proven to be an extremely useful examination during pregnancy, yet it is available to only a few privileged people in the developing world.  Furthermore, in developing countries, there is an extreme shortage of sonographers and doctors trained to perform an ultrasound. However, the number of trained nurses and midwives is far greater. An innovative proposal would be to rapidly expand the number of nurses and midwives to perform a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to identify high-risk pregnant patients who can then be referred to regional hospitals for further management.

The only way of detecting abnormal placenta challenges is via an ultrasound. The impact of a mobile ultrasound device transcends geographies and socioeconomic classes. Today there are more than 7 billion mobile connections globally.
