Major airlines say they are planning to cancel hundreds of flights on Friday -- out of thousands of daily flights -- as the Federal Aviation Administration is set to begin limiting flight capacity at 40 major U.S. airports amid the government shutdown. As of 2:30 a.m. ET on Friday morning, at least 814 flights within, into or out of the United States have been cancelled so far, per FlightAware. American Airlines said Thursday it will cancel about 220 of its roughly 6,000 departures starting Friday and lasting through this weekend.

A federal judge ruled that Border Patrol agents in Chicago used excessive force against protesters and misled the court about it. Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino threw tear gas at protesters on October 23, claiming he was hit in the head by a rock to justify it—but video showed he wasn't actually hit until after he threw the tear gas and he didn't warn people first as required. The judge issued an order limiting how much force agents can use during immigration arrests and protests, citing other incidents where agents used tear gas and grenades without warning. The government says it will appeal, arguing that agents need to be able to use force to protect themselves.

Flight cuts underway after FAA orders reduction due to government shutdown. Flight cuts have been taken into effect. A 4% reduction in domestic flights is in effect following an order from the Federal Aviation Administration. It currently affects 40 airports in major US cities, but further cuts are planned in the coming days, due to staffing issues caused by the government shutdown. About 800 flights across the US have been canceled today, and travelers are frustrated with the disruptions. A resolution appears no closer after Senate Democrats signaled yesterday they were prepared to block GOP plans to force a vote today — until they got more commitments on dealing with rising health care costs.
