I found Ben Ratliff’s book, Every Song Ever, to be quite interesting. I thought it was cool the way he was able to change the way we all listened to our own music and how he sculpted the way we think about music. Whether I agreed with his views or not, he made sure to provide many examples, so you could hear for yourself the musical element he was trying to explain. My favorite aspects of the book were the chapters over sadness and slowness which tend to tie together. How the slowness of the song along with the lyrical content and the instrumentation can give a song the feeling of depression or melancholy is fascinating me. One problem that I had was understanding some of the chapters. Some of the examples he gave I didn’t know so listening for the musical element within them was kind of difficult. This made it hard to grasp exactly what he was trying to say. Over all I felt he did a great job tying together each element in the book to explain how each one can play off the others. From now on, I’m going to find myself listening for each of these aspects in the music I listen to daily.
