This shows though the mother looks as if she is doing her best to care for the child, there are others willing to judge. There are many ways to interpret this piece, in the image you can see a somewhat clown-like figure. That could be the father of the child trying his hardest to care for his family. Being a street performer at this time was not a sought-after job or one that was respected. the father willing to do anything to care for his child. This connects to Gregor's situation. it shows how even though in the novella Gregor is the caregiver, he still wishes to be taken care of, he never had that, and the rolls were reversed.

This poem is about not feeling good enough for anything or anybody. Gregor never felt like he was providing enough for his family. He could never make enough money to satisfy his parents. He also felt like he was not good enough for his job. while always traveling for work, they still thought that he was stealing money from the company making his self-esteem go down. When the office manager showed up at his door, he was criticized for not being on time even though he was always on time.
