The speaker in this song is the artist himself, Hozier. He wrote this song while comparing a lover to religion. The song follows a romantic relationship between two men and its subsequent violent homophobic backlash. Hozier wrote this song after his breakup with his girlfriend. The song reflects Hozier's frustration with the teaching of the Catholic Church. He especially made this song for the LGBTQ+ community and the religions that claim gay is a sin. The artist meant for the song to attack policies that value rules and prejudice over love and acceptance. The subject, in this case, would be the discrimination churches have against homosexuality.

Hozier acting as the speaker attempts to tell the LGBTQ community and also the religious who say that being gay is a sin that they can't just value rules and prejudice over love and acceptance.
They use the appeals of Ethos and Pathos in the lyrics and the appeals of Logos and Pathos in the video to get this message across.
In analyzing the lyrics and video it appears that their use of their use of appeals is effective in convincing their intended audience.

Lyrics Analysis- Ethos

The first two lines of the song are "My lover's got humor/She's the giggle at a funeral". These two lines use ethos because it describes Hozier's girlfriend, it describing her personality. It tells us how funny she is, it also tells us what kind of person she is. In the first lyrics "lover" symbolizes the good in life and in the second lyrics "funeral" symbolizes the bad in life. Even when things are awful, his lover is the 'positive' in his life.

In the song, Hozier talks about both his ex-girlfriend and church. In lines 7 and 8 he states, "Every Sunday's getting more bleak/A fresh poison each week" He is trying to tell us that going to church every Sunday has become regular, and the messages they preach are becoming increasingly out of date. They preach 'poison' or hatred towards the new world systems.

We can see Hozier uses pathos in his lyrics through different lines. One would be "The only heaven I'll be sent to is when I am alone with you", this line tells us that he is at peace when he's with his lover. The only peace ("heaven") he knows is when he is making love ("I'm alone") with her. A second one would be "My lover's the sunlight". This is a reference to how his lover is the light of his world.
