Washington was an american educator, author, orator, and advisor to presidents of the united states. Between 1890 and 1915 he was the dominant leader of the african-american community. He was the last generation of the black american leaders born into slavery. He was also a key proponent of african-american businesses and one of the founders of the national negro business league. Washington gave a speech known as “ Atlanta Compromise “ due to the lynching going on, after the speech it brought him fame.
