I would rely mostly on expert power as a prime minister to impact long-term change. Expert power stems from trust and knowledge, which builds credibility and inspires people to follow and listen to me. A good example would be leaders like Nelson Mandela who were able to pursue and gain long-term social reforms because they were well respected and had good knowledge of social issues and history. Expert power is important for dealing with highly complex problems, such as climate change or economic inequality. It is also crucial for dealing with severe challenges because those problems require well-rounded and complex solutions that work over long periods of time. This is why I chose Expert power.

If I were the Prime Minister for a day, I would rely on expert power the most. Expert power has its roots in knowledge and information, and stems from possessing specialized knowledge, skills, and expertise that others value. This can build a sense of trust, since in that situation I would have a certain amount of credibility, and citizens would be more inclined to follow my given directions. One example would actually be Bill Gates. Central to his leadership at Microsoft would be his extensive technical knowledge, and this knowledge is why people were more willing to listen to his instructions - making him a perfect example of expert power in action. Expert power can be used in many situations, like handling a specialised crisis - whether it could be history homework on a school level, or global warming on a global level. Coupled with a strategic vision, I believe expert power would be the most effective to create a long-term change, and that is why I chose expert power.

I would choose expert power as it has many advantages. For example, expert power means being particularly skilled in a certain area. Having expert power as Prime Minister will allow me to think of greater solutions to the citizens' problems or ways to improve the country without consequences. Citizens will begin to trust me as they know that what I am doing is helping them and also right. They will look up to me and hence be more cooperative (e.g. if I ask them not to use too many plastic bags, they'll listen and try their best). My friend's expertise has always been math. Whatever questions we had, she would answer them politely in the correct structure. I really look up to her. Hence, I wish to rely on expert power if I were a Prime Minister, allowing others to look up to me and follow me willingly, thus most effectively creating a long-term change:).

As Prime Minister for the day, I would utilize Referent Power to achieve sustainable and significant change. In contrast to coercive or reward powers, which depend on force or resources, Referent Power establishes sincere respect and collaboration founded on respect and charisma. I would employ this type of power to promote a culture of inclusivity, equality, and sustainability and inspire individuals to collaborate toward shared objectives. By leading through policies focusing on education, climate, and healthcare, I would be bringing about long-term change while maintaining public trust and support. Referent Power enables us to generate loyalty without coercion, building a basis for good change that will last for generations to come. (Luiza)

If I was prime minister for a day, I would choose to use expert power. I would use expert power to make smart decisions based on expert advice as I would have a broader knowledge about a certain field. This would also help to address problems more efficiently as my decisions would be well thought out. By using expert power, people would have more confidence in me and trust me more as I would be making decisions based on knowledge and facts rather than personal opinions or political influence. This would also mean that people would be more likely to follow something that I say as they would trust that I would not be spreading false information or guessing based on a limited understanding of something.

If I were prime minister, I would rely on all powers. However, if I could only pick one, I would pick expert power. In my opinion, it is important to have all powers, and one power is more powerful when backed by other powers. For example, if I had legitimate power but no referent power, reward power or expert power, I might not be an effective leader, as I am only in power because of a position or title I hold. The people I lead might not like me, and in the worst case scenario, they could stage a rebellion, like what has happened in many other countries before. (e.g. French revolution) Without expert power, it is difficult to have coercive power. (how do you build a bomb if you do not know how to build a bomb in the first place?) With all the powers, I would be a well-liked leader with resources, knowledge and more at my hand. However, if I could only choose one power, I would choose expert power. I could hire people with experience and knowledge to help me lead so that we could make the best possible decisions for the country together. When my citizens see their experience, they are more likely to trust us, especially if the leaders have done something similar before.

Charlotte Friedman 1T

As prime minister, I would most likely use referent power. I feel that if people like you and respect you for who you are and if you are charismatic, they would most likely follow you more and obey the law and rules more willingly, instead of them only following you because you have coercive power or they fear you. Doing this builds a more trustable and batter community, and the citizens would most likely stand behind you if there are any like conflicts or other stuff. I believe having a good relationship with the community is better for everyone, thus creating a positive long term change.

I would also make wise, logical choices that benefited the country most, instead of making rash, illogical decisions that were made under the influence of others. I would. Also have the people’s confidence and trust, which leads to referent power. Thus, expert power is like having a 2-in-1 package deal! This is why if I was prime minister for a day, I would rely on expert power the most.

Isabel Koh 1M

If I were prime minister, I would rely on legitimate power the most. With legitimate power, people would have to follow my rules because I would hold a position over them. Legitimate power would allow one to use all the other types of powers lawfully. Even if the people did not respect me, they would still have to follow my rules because I would have authority and if they did not follow the rules and rebelled, my legitimate power would allow me to have them punished. In my opinion, legitimate power is the most useful power as it forces others to follow what you say as you are in a higher position to give commandments than they are. For example, if you were working in a group project, all the members would mostly listen and follow the group leader’s commandments because the leader has power assigned to them. Hence, the other members would accept what the leader says and follow the rules, whether they like it or not.

As long as the person with legitimate power does not abuse the power and uses it to bring about good changes in the community, many good long term effects can be achieved.

Jamie Koh 1-M

If I were Prime Minister for one day, I would use Expert Power the most. I would not use Referent Power, because it is just for the day, and I cannot make long-lasting impacts with Referent Power. I would already have Legitimate Power, so I would not need to use it. I would not use Reward or Coercive power, because for one day using these two powers would not get me anywhere. If I tried to use one of the two powers, there would not be enough time to follow up or produce the rewards (for reward power) and the change would only be short-term. However, if I used Expert power, I could use my knowledge and combine it with other experts, to make laws and rules that would benefit the people for a long time. It would also gain trust from some people, and they would not be begrudgingly trusting me like if I used Reward, legitimate or coercive power. So even after my day as Prime Minister ends, I might till have supporters and continue to make changes that would benefit those around me.
