The second wave lasted about two decades and the movement quickly spread around the United States. This wave focused on every area of a women’s experience including; family, sexuality and work. In Madmen this theme is major, as the women are harassed in many different ways. Most of the women stay quiet because they are afraid that if they were to stand up they could potentially lose there job, this is actually accurate at the time as the women didn't have dominate roles in the work place. In the show most of the women would work 'feminine' jobs like being a secretary and would work under the men, for example in the show Peggy is the secretary for Don Draper, were Don has higher authority. Joan put Peggy in her place because she felt that Peggy was coming off as feminist, she say "You're the new girl and you're not much, so you might as well enjoy it while it lasts".  Peggy is not only oppressed by men but of her own sex as well, this could effect how a person grows as an individual.

In the show Madmen, women are shown as lower ranked in the social class. They are shown as less intelligent then the opposing sex, a good example of this is Joan Holloway. Peggy just got hired as a secretary for an advertising agency. Joan Holloway, office manager, is introducing Peggy to her new job. while giving her a tour of the office, she shows her her desk where there is a new typewriter. she tell her, "Try not to be overwhelmed by all this technology. It looks complicated, but the men who designed it made it simple enough for a women to use". This quote is very significant because this sets the theme of that which continues throughout the show. Even though she realizes what she says is sexist, she understands her status in her workplace. she is looked at as a eye candy to please the men at the office. By exploiting the ideals of feminism she has gained some authority in the office and given 'head secretary'. Oppressing women is normal to Don. He sees an opportunity to use his masculinity to show his dominance at work because how could a woman disrespect a male? Does she not know her position in society? She’s lucky to be even working with males. This is the opinion of most males in the 1960s and Draper is a perfect example. Because he has more authority, he feels that he could do anything without any consequences regarding the oppression females. He’s trying to show his authority and to prove that even though feminism is on the rise, it still hasn’t affected how women are treated. work isn’t the only place where he objectifies females. His relationship life is filled with women. He has an affair with Midge, while at home he has two kids. Don has no remorse for how women are negatively treated. People like Don Draper are the reason why feminism was so significant in the 1960s, because this was the time where you were able to speak your voice. But habits are hard to break, as the women for centuries have been oppressed by males.
