Active learning is an approach where learners participate in the learning process by building knowledge and understanding. In schools they will usually do this in response to learning opportunities designed by their teacher.

Active Learning Theory refers to the ability for learners to construct or built their own understanding of particular concepts or topics. It works by making meaning, enabling learners to develop understanding in different stages.

Other examples of active learning techniques include role-playing, case studies, group projects, think-pair-share, peer teaching, debates, Just-in-Time Teaching, and short demonstrations followed by class discussion.

Active learning builds both knowledge and understanding which students can then apply to new contexts and problems. This understanding and problem-solving approach is attractive to employers and universities.

Constructivism is the theory that says learners construct knowledge rather than just passively take in information. As people experience the world and reflect upon those experiences, they build their own representations and incorporate new information into their pre-existing knowledge (schemas).

Misconceptions of Active Learning

#1 – Sometimes teachers think implementing active learning techniques in large classes can be daunting. But in reality, active learning is quite freeing when we are facing many students. Stepping away from a lecture-style format allows the students to do more group work, and group work is a great way to engage students.

# 2- Sometimes teacher gives the handout, notes, or ready-projects into the hand of the students, thinking it might help them to progress. This is one of the common misconceptions because students then will confine themselves at a certain point. However, without doing this teachers should engage the students making them do the projects or handouts by themselves. Thus they can learn through practice and moreover they can apply their knowledge further. Here teacher should play the role of a facilitator.

Constructivism plays an important role in active learning where teachers' contribution is very little, they only provide a resource and well-structured pedagogy which helps learners to evoke their own way of thinking and understanding. Teachers should be developing the curriculum in a way that should be student-oriented, engaging, and interactive. Learners will pose questions and they will solve the problem through group discussion, interacting with their peers. Teachers should shape learners to raise inquisition to build knowledge through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Children innovate and process their ideas and knowledge on their own, they are not ready to fill up their heads with others’ ideas. So, a good teacher should think from their perspective. Being a teacher to understand children's reasoning to see things from their point of view. The teacher should not focus on measuring how well they can count numbers, spells, or solve problems as a way of grading their IQ, rather they should be more interested in the way fundamental concepts like the very idea of number, time, causality emerged in a naturalistic way. Active learning is a process of any approach to instruction where all students are asked to engage in the learning process. In this way of learning, students are passive recipients of knowledge. The teacher will divide students into small or large activities writing, talking, problem-solving, or reflective. This way of teaching method range from short, simple activities like journal writing, paired discussion, involved activities, or pedagogical framework like case studies, role-plays, and structured team-based learning. Successful active learning activities provide an opportunity for all students to think and engage with course material and practice skills for learning, applying, synthesizing, or summarizing that material. The teacher also needs to place some emphasis on students’ exploration of their own attitudes and values. In a successful classroom, a teacher should follow some specific techniques like giving students steps on a process on the stripe of paper that are disorganized; asking them to reconstruct in a proper sequence. This approach of activity will strengthen students’ reasoning process and enable them to think critically. It will also test their mental model of the process. mental model of the process.
