I qualified from Glasgow Vet School in 1994 and after a year in mixed practice returned to Glasgow to complete a PhD in canine atopic dermatitis and the Certificate in Veterinary Dermatology. In 1999 I joined Edinburgh's Telford College as a veterinary nursing lecturer. Following a return to practice in 2003 I then joined Napier University in 2004 as lecturer in Veterinary Nursing. I taught a number of different courses including pathology, exotics and emergency nursing but the main focus was on Evidence Based Practice and supervising Honours Projects. During that time I also studied for FHEA. Since then I have run my own small animal practice, contributed to 2 City & Guilds Vet Nursing courses (exotics and emergency medicine) and worked with Guide Dogs for the Blind. Now I work for Vets Now as Clinical Development Manager and this year was made a Member of the Academy of Medical Educators and an FRCVS. I am keen to develop the volume of veterinary nursing research that is available to practitioners.

After completing a degree in Psychology, I decided that a career in Veterinary Nursing was a much more interesting choice, and upon graduation, immediately started working in a small animal veterinary practice. I qualified in 1995, and spent sixteen years working in small animal and mixed practices and at the PDSA. Working with, and training student veterinary nurses allowed me to realise how much I loved teaching, and I moved to a teaching position at Glasgow Vet School, training the veterinary students in clinical skills. Working within academia after 16 years in practice was a very steep learning curve, (and a bit of a shock to the system!) but I love working with the students, and it has also allowed me to complete several post graduate teaching qualifications, including a Master’s degree in Education. I am currently Clinical Skills Leader at the Vet School, and co-ordinate all practical teaching within the BVMS undergraduate course, but I am really excited to be working with Veterinary Nurses again. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me with any concerns or questions. I know exactly how scary and intimidating it can be to be thrust into academia again! On a more personal note, I love to read and go hill walking with my gorgeous black Labrador, River (below). We’re very lucky here at the Vet School that we are allowed to bring our dogs to work with us, and she spends every day in the office with me, and gives great hugs when I’m having a stressful day. Good luck with the course and I look forward to spending the next few yeatrs working alongside you.
