Income is fairly distributed and the gap between the middle class and the rich is not large. As noted by Kenichi Ohmae (Japanese theorist and professor) in the early Nineties, “The standard of living has increased steadily over the past forty years; more than 90 percent of the people consider themselves middle class and reasonably happy about their life.”
However, with a population of over 126 million, things can get pretty crowded. On trains, commuters are even warned of broken ribs. Roads are packed by the several million cars that pass over them each day. Pollution and inequality rates are slowly growing. This is partly due to their diet, which is mostly made up of fresh, non-processed foods. The Japanese diet is grain dominant, due to foods such as rice or noodles (see pie chart below). In recent years however their intake of sugar and fat has risen above 25%. To combat this, the Japanese government issued the "Metabo" law, which legally enforced 40-74 year old natives to keep their waistlines within certain limits. Surgical masked are typically worn in public to avoid the spreading of disease, and not wearing one while sick can actually be considered very rude.
