1271-1295 AD: Marco Polo visits China. China begins to be exposed to the Western world.

Late 1700s: The Industrial Revolution begins, creating a high demand for child laborers in industrialized countries around the world.

1833: Britain passes the Factory Act, which raises the minimum age of workers to 9 and limits working hours for minors. It is one of the earliest laws passed against child labor.

1836: Massachusetts is the first state to require 3 months of education for factory workers under 15.

1949: China becomes the communist People’s Republic of China.

1958-1961: The Great Leap Industrialization program is designed to transform China into an industrialized country.

1979: China creates the One Child Policy, which eventually will lead to an unintentional dearth of workers.

1986: The Nine Year Compulsory Education Act is established in China.

1999: China ratifies the Minimum Age Act and established 16 as the legal age for labor.

2001: China joins the World Trade Organization; there is a media outrage over Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji refusing to admit that the explosion that killed 40 elementary school children in class happened because they were being forced to assemble fireworks in a work-study program.

2002: China ratifies the Worst Forms of Child Labor Act that makes child labor in prostitution, the drug trade and similar affairs illegal while also requiring basic education. 

2007: Most recent revision of the Minors Protection Law; China is revealed to have been using child labor to produce Olympic paraphernalia for the coming year, tarnishing the country’s reputation.

2008: A notable child labor ring is exposed, bringing child labor into the public eye; China hosts the Olympics.

2012: Despite being a well known, global company, Samsung is forced to crackdown on it’s Chinese factories after allegations of child labor prove true. 

2015: China ends the One Child Policy.
