We Are Water Protectors
This book includes a large amount of blue colors and Native American patterns; the language is very simple, and the illustrations clearly show the antagonist and the battle against it, which makes it understandable without reading. It is a story about a girl and her tribe and their battle against an oil pipeline being installed on their land, which is signified as a black snake. The story follows the girl, who like the children in a kindergarten or first grade classroom identifies something she has no understanding of, the pipeline, with something she does understand, a black snake. She also rallies the tribe, which gives the story a strong connection to family who stand together when facing the snake, which gives a sense of strength when surrounded by family, so this book would most likely appeal to children who feel strong around family and friends.
Lindstrom, Carole. We Are Water Protectors.

Wolf In The Snow
Is about a girl who becomes lost in the snow on her way home from school and finds a wolf pup left behind by it’s pack. It contains no writing, except for the use of a few vowels to display the fear and exhaustion of the girl and the howling of the wolves. The book showcases a sense of loneliness, although the girl finds a friend in a wolf, something that humans have feared since the beginning of the beginning of time; this could be used as an example for children to be friendly towards people they otherwise would be afraid of.
Cordell, Matthew. Wolf In The Snow.

The Adventures of Beekle The Unimaginary Friend
Is about an imaginary friend named Beekle that has yet to be imagined by a child, and he decides to go to the city, where he realizes life is not the way he had imagined it. He also found a friend who was not like the one he had imagined, and they went on adventures and did things most childhood friends do. It showcases curiosity about the world and shows children that they must be brave in order to learn about the world, it also showcases that sometimes things do not occur the way we always think they will.
Santat, Dan. The Adventures of Beekle The Unimaginary Friend.

The Little House
Is about a farmhouse that was built sturdily, and could not be torn down. Eventually, a city was built around her and she was very unhappy, but a relative of the man who built her came and moved the house back to the countryside. The house had wanted to live in the city, but quickly realized she regretted her wish. This story shows that we must be careful what we wish for because it may not be what we want. There is little use of time, except for phrases like “before now”, and there is a lot of repetition of the benefits of living in the country, like seeing the sun and moon multiple times. Which helps ingrain how good the house’s old situation was.
Burton, Virginia. The Little House. Boston, 1942, Houghton Mifflin.

The Snowy Day
This story is about a boy’s adventure during a snowstorm; there is a lot of repetition that makes it easy for children to understand. It also teaches the lesson that children should not be so eager to grow up fast, but instead of providing an example of why with something bad happening, it teaches children to be patient while waiting to grow up. They also show that the snow is not going anywhere, which further pushes the point that children should be patient.
Keats, Ezra. The Snowy Day.

Is about a Japanese woman who cannot stop herself from laughing. She chases a dumpling into a cave full of demons and steals a magical spatula from them, which she uses to make herself rich. The story is realistically meant to be funny, but it could also be used in an interdisciplinary situation for social studies, as there is references to Japanese culture and religion. It would serve very well to teach children about Japanese culture while keeping them very entertained.
Mosel, Arlene. The Funny Little Woman. New York, E.P.

Make Way For Ducklings
This story is about a family of ducks and the challenges they face to go from the Charles river to the Boston Public Square. It has a strong family element, as the mother duck seemed very concerned for the safety of her ducklings. It also references and shows multiple locations in Boston, like Beacon Hill and the Boston Public Square; these could prove good to begin conversations about the city of Boston, and the role it played in American independence, for example. The art style was simple, but easy enough for a young child to follow without having to read.
McCloskey, Robert. Make Way For Ducklings.

Jumanji
Is about two children who find a board game that cannot be ended once it is started, and every roll of the dice brings some new jungle horror that frightens the children, though only a few minutes earlier they were horribly bored and hoped for such craziness to occur. This story explicated that children should be careful what they wish for, it also shows that they should be grateful for the peace that they have, even if it is boring. Overall the book is entertaining and funny, but it also teaches some good lessons about sibling-hood and respecting the things we have.
Van Allsburg, Chris. Jumanji.

The Undefeated
Is a poetic book about the challenges that African Americans faced during slavery and racial segregation; it also shows famous African American athletes who proved they were strong and unshaken by racism. The book could be used in a classroom to teach about slavery and segregation in a serious, but still lighthearted manner; there are many recognizable faces from multiple sports in the story that children could relate to and realize that the story is about the strength of African Americans that is still needed in today’s time without having to explain the horror of racism and slavery.

The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship
Is a story about a foolish Russian peasant who’s parents have no love for who takes flight on a magical flying ship that sails for the Czar’s royal court, where the fool marries a princess after God grants him an army to scare the Czar with. There is multiple references to God, which may pose a problem in a public school, but it proved that everyone should be kind to everyone they meet regardless of how different they may seem. It might also be relevant to children who lack attention from their parents, since the fool’s parents basically kick him out of their home.
Ransome, Arthur. The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship.
