Our grandparents would take us there on a double-decker bus from Newcastle. Grandma would always have a pic-nic bag with her full of goodies to eat and drink. My brother and I would spend all day playing on the beach. At dusk Grandad would take us for walks along the beach and we would stop at one of the telescopes on the promenade and contemplate the marvels of the sky. It was a very happy time. 
I still visit Cullercoats regularly and it feels like I have never really left the North East of England.
