Black Lives Matter, So Have the Courage to Show It

Black people matter, but some schools don't show it because they lack the courage and boldness to stand up for their most vulnerable populations. This song/video is being used because I wanted to use it as a part of a black history presentation with my son when he was in the 5th grade, but the administration wouldn’t allow it. They were so afraid of being aligned/associated with the BLM movement, that just the words “Black Lives Matter” couldn’t be used to uplift and affirm their more than 60% black population.

For far too long, the educational system has been one that has sought to “transform” students by instilling the main culture’s norms, ideals, beliefs, and teachings, but Social Justice Leadership and Education takes that concept and flips it on its head. Instead of attempting to transform students into a homogenous mish-mash of people operating for the benefit of the system, Social Justice and Social Justice Leadership accepts, respects, and celebrates the uniqueness of each individual and allows that individuality to be an asset to all.

It is important that leaders of social justice are protective of those who are most vulnerable and who have suffered (either directly or indirectly), the effects of oppression. It requires the relinquishing of power and perceived power in order to effectively ensure that ALL people are equitably treated, educated, and led. For descendants of the oppressors, this is not a denouncement of the history that has led to systems that oppress and mistreat others, but instead a bold facing of that history head on and a diving into dismantling its effects face first.
